Where to hunt?

I will be hunting in ny next year with my brother and my dad. The property we have is on a mountain and am wondering where we should hunt, in a field near the top of the mountain in the rut or early season or at the bottom of the hill in the rut or early season. The top of the mountain has a few fields andI will be putting a small 30 by 30 food plot on. Where will the big bucks roam, near the top of the mountain or the bottom? Thanks
mike

If the season is out where you are considering hunting I would be out there now scouting. Look for food sources (although with the heavy acorn crop this year next year might be very poor), trails, bedding areas, and mainly scrapes. IMHO a 30x30 foot food plot is not worth the time, although there may be a few that disagree. The big bucks will stay where they feel safe, until the rut.

definitely get out there and do some scouting ASAP to see what the deer are/have been doing over the past few months. You can start scouting during the summer but you have to remember that dee will change their migratory patterns in the summer and they may be totally different from what you're seeing during hunting season. Like timbercruiser said the big bucks are going to stay where they feel safe. As for a 30x30 food plot, you might want to look into doing some mineral supplementation rather than making such a small food plot.

last season i did no scouting and saw nothing the season before i scouted and saw lots. IMHO making a foood plot is a good idea

if all you have is a 30x30 area and its in the middle of the woods, be prepared to make weekly trips to the area to clear the leaves out of the food plots which will leave a lot of scent in the plot...also, if you use something good like imperial whitetail clover in your food plot, the deer will eat it down to the dirt in a matter of weeks and will then move on...obviously you know your land much better than we do, just make sure that it will be worth the time and money investment
