RE: iron sights

I have a Rem 7600 carbine in 30:06 with modified straight stock and a Williams Peep sight looking at a fire dot front sight. I paint the outside of the peep red same color as the front sight. Great on thick terrain and fast shots out to 100 yds. No trouble seeing the sights and I will be 60 this summer.

I have a winchester .30-.30 and a winchester in .44 mag. Lever actions. I use them both as "drive guns" for when I am driveing for other people. I have killed lots of deer with both. Love open sight hunting. I never have any problem finding deer in a scope, but having open sights is another fun way of hunting. My personal limitation is about 50 yards with the .44 and a 100 or a little more with the .30-.30

RE: iron sights

I have a marlin 30-30 with a sweet vintage redfield peep sight. I use the raw aperture, with no insert. It is incredibly fast on target. I had the sight on my old .35, and shot deer out to 100 yards with it, but now I also have a scoped rifle, and only use the marlin in short range situations. The longest shot I've taken with the 30-30 is about 20 yards. I also have an extra large bead on the front, so anything over about 50 yards the bead would be bigger than the vitals.
