RE: My first Keeper.
Nice deer. Yes its worth mounting, especially if it means something to you.
|
RE: My first Keeper.
Visually i think that deer would make a beautiful mount. As far as if you should mount it or not, it's really based on why you want to mount it. Heck, I'd mount a spike if it brought back memories of a great hunt with my kids for instance.
If i bagged a big one and for some reason was just not proud of it or it didn't excite me to think about it then i wouldnt mount it Up to you buddy Congrats on a great deer!!!!!!!! Oh, and by the way.. Is that the best smile you can muster up after killing a beauty like that?? C'mon man cheese it up :D;) |
RE: My first Keeper.
Thats like asking if my farts stink! Of course they do! Great buck, I would definitely have him mounted! Congrats
|
RE: My first Keeper.
Nice deer man. Since he's your first keeper, did you throw the rest back?
|
RE: My first Keeper.
He'll make afine looking mount that you could surely be proud of, if that's what you're asking.
I've seen plenty of small ones that I would nevermount but others do and that's great for them, and I've seen plenty of Iowa monster racks simply nailed to the wall of a barn that most folks would consider the buck of a lifetime, but to them it's just a deer. It's purely a personal thing. |
RE: My first Keeper.
i would definiely keep him
|
RE: My first Keeper.
awesome buck...
|
RE: My first Keeper.
Congrats on an awesome buck.
get that dude on the wall. I think like others said its all up to you but I know for me I'd mount ones smaller than that. So far I have only gotten one I wanted to spend the money on to get a shoulder mount. The others are on the wall too just not shoulder mounts. I had a boy out from church he had an opertunity at a half rack 4 point. He got buck fever and didn't get him but I would have had him mounted for him. Also my daughter had a close encounter with a young 8 point. Another that I would have spent the money for. Again thats a nice looking buck. I hope you get him to the taxi or freeze the cape so you don't loose it. |
RE: My first Keeper.
I have had 6 deer mounted, and every time I look at the first 4 that I had done, I ask myself why I mounted them. I killed a 145" 11 point this season and have opted for a european mount instead of a shoulder. That might be something you want to consider.

Nice buck, keep him, mount him, display him proudly.
|
RE: My first Keeper.
Great for being your first!.......Mount?....Heck Yeah!IMHO, every one after this one, has to be better to mount or I'll do as Retrieverman suggested....
|
RE: My first Keeper.
That is very nice looking rack. Very symmetrical, ... long riser tines, decent spread. It would make a beautiful mount. There may be bigger, brawnier deer, but very few would be more aesthetically pleasing for a mount.

RE: My first Keeper.
Splitear_Leland said what I first thought- heck they all are keepers. I'm not into catch and release deer hunting yet. I don't like it for fishing either, but that deserves its own thread.
8mm/06 said it right, that is a beauty. It looks like a good healty deer should look, symmetric, tall, and pretty wide, with a good graceful look. Go for it if that is what you want. A first buck like that gets mounted even here in the land of the giants. A buddy of mine had his first deer mounted and it was a doe. 35 years later it is now displayed in the great room of his house along with a 160" deer his son shot. Bob |
RE: My first Keeper.
Nice buck-no doubt you should have mounted
|
RE: My first Keeper.
heck yeah!! nice buck
|
RE: My first Keeper.
Man, if they only looked like that down here in East Central Florida....Good job!!!!!!!!!! A trophy animal to meis when all my preperations come together and that breath, aim, squeeze connects and I get to bring home the Back Strap for the Bar-B!!!!! Our deer down here tend to average around 110-130#s. Hunting on public land, most bucks are only 1.5-3.0 year olds and the soil is sually not rich so antler growth is corresponding. They are all trophies!![]() |
RE: My first Keeper.
Like stated above that is a nice deer and will make a great mount. I have had a few mounted in the past some fairly big ( around 130) some not and this year I am having one mounted that would only score around 100 and is a 7 point but he had a very unusual rack and was still half in velvet a trophy is in what you see it to be.

RE: My first Keeper.
nice looking buck.
|
RE: My first Keeper.
I mounted my first "shooter" buck... Not the biggest, a 2.5 year old, that probably might break 130. I have had 4 deer since then, each progressivelly larger. Mounted all of them. I still look fondly at my first "big" buck.
I look at it this way... If I don't want to mount it now I let him walk, maybe next year IMO. I would rather shoot a doe. If I am not mounting them then what are they besides freezer meat! Economically I am pretty well-off so that has never been a concern for me... I understand for some it might be. Anyway Congrats, and get him mounted otherwise you might regret it! |
RE: My first Keeper.
Nice buck. Deff. worth mounting.
|
RE: My first Keeper.
id put him on the wall!
nice buck, congrats |
RE: My first Keeper.
Nice deer. Congrats. I would mount it.
|
RE: My first Keeper.
I'm getting him mounted in a full sneak position because when I hollered to stop him that's the way he looked right before I dropped him with 1 shot at 80yds. I killed him on some Management Land located in Chickasaw County in the Northern part of MS. I tried to score him but I only came up with about 105" to 110" but I think he is a little bigger than that. What do you guys think he scores? Thanks for all the comments on my deer.

RE: My first Keeper.
taddbitt,
Based on the G-2 length I would have to think he is more towards the high 120's... But I could be wrong, I think you are low in your scoring... But don't get too caught up in scoring, he is a "shooter" buck in 99% of the population out there. As for the full sneak it is a great pose... I have always gone with semi-sneak, just my personal preference. Show us some mounted pictrues when he is complete. |
RE: My first Keeper.
Thats a great buck, and yes i would mount it too.
|
RE: My first Keeper.
Yep.. I would put it on the wall.
