Default Short to Mid range deer caliber recomendation needed

Hi guys,
First post on the forum and was hoping for some advise. I have been deer hunting for quite some time now and would like to have a "strictly Whitetail deer" rifle built. The absolute longest range would be 300 yards and that would be next to never. I was interested in the 7mm-08, 308, 260 and after reading the 243 post, maybe the .243.I am trying to build a light to medium weight rifle with low recoil and reasonable ammunition.
I would really like your opinions on the subject. Please feel free to throw in other calibers if you think I am overlooking one.

Thanks in advance for any replies.

Get the 7mm-08 it will have very low recoil and ballistics close to those of the .270. Its a great deer rifle.

You could also look at the 25-06
Should fit quite nicely with what you are looking for.

I like the 243 if recoil is a big factor. It is measurably less than the others mentioned. The 25-06 isright with the others you listed

I don't know what youconsider "low recoil". I grew up in slug gun country and my 280 Rem., 308 Win. and 30-06 Spr.(don't have it anymore)are cream puffs compared to my 11-87 12 ga. shooting slugs, my Ithaca model 37 is even worse. I'd look at a Remington SPS in 7mm-08 Rem. or 308 Win. Both willdo very well out to 300 yards.Ihave really come to appreciate matte finishes and synthetic stocks onhunting rifles and shotguns. A SPS topped with a Nikon or Leupold scope would make a nice set up.

2ndvote for .25-06. imo it is the best whitetail caliber out there. more than capable of taking deer from 0-500+ yards with minimal recoil. the only drawback is depending on where you live, ammo is not as accesible as say .30-06. people have been hunting everything from yotes to elk with .25-06's for decades.

my second choice would be the .30-06 just due to the unlimited ammo choices and availability.

25-06! Then 260, then 7-08 then 6.5-284(if you really like customs and handloading!)....

If you don't care whether you have a long or short action, the .25-06 is a good choice. If you want to be as light as possible, the .260 or the 7mm-08 would be my top picks.

.270, time proven, good selection of ammo everywhere at a decent price and with a Limb-Saver pad it has light recoil.
