A .260 is an awesome gun. I bought my wife one. No kick to mention and with the right bullets 120 grain. They kill very good. I have used it on several occasions with great success. Wish I had one.

Based on your criteria you would probably want a 7mm-08 as you want a light to medium weight rifle ,capable of 300 yards and for deer. As far as a rifleI would look into the kimber 84M weighs about 5lbs 6 oz. I do not own this gun nor this cartridge but based on your criteria it would suit you.

All of the calibers you mentioned would work well... plus the 25/06 is a favorite of mine. As far as the rifle itself, do yourself a favor and check into Cooper rifles.

short to midrange to me is 50 to 150 yds not 300 yds.
A 30-30 or .250 would fit the bill for short to midrange shooting with moderate to light recoil, for 300 yds a .243, 25-06, .270, or 7 mag would be the flatter shootingcartridges - with light to moderate recoil.
