is this possible?
say i want to shoot a .243 for deer and varmints. can i sight the gun in so i can shoot 100gr. and 55gr. without ajusting the scope everytime i switch up the hunt.

RE: is this possible?
big difference in 100 grain and 55 grain.100 grain will drop way more than 55 grain.hmmm just use 100 grain on both d:)

RE: is this possible?
Just shoot the 85 grain BTHP from Federal. It will work great for both deer and varmit. It is what I use for deer and it is a wicked bullet.

RE: is this possible?
I shoot Wenchester 100 gr. psp for what ever I shoot. it works great on them all. if you want one for both that doesn't drop very much , try the 90 gr.

RE: is this possible?
You could sight in with a 100 grain mark your elavation dial. Sight in the 55 grain and mark dial. Then when you switch back to either you'll just have a couple of clicks to get there.

RE: is this possible?
Depends on how much different they shoot. If they shot pretty close windage wise I would just sight in with the lighter bullets then see how it shoots with the 100 grn bullets. Chances are out to 200 yards there will not be much difference, at least not enough that will matter on a target the size of deers vitals.
I have been told though that most .243's do not like the 55 grn bullets, just to light and fast for the twist rate I guess. So you may have to go with something heavier anyway just to get it to shoot well. I'm thinking of doing the same thing, but I am just going to split the difference and use a 80 grn or so bullet. The trajectory for a 80 grn bullet out of a .243 is pretty similar to a 55 grn bullet out of a 22-250 out to 300 yards. Plus it would carry more energy do to the heavier bullet. Paul |
RE: is this possible?
would the 80gr. be big ebough for deer? and small enough fo coyotes?
|
RE: is this possible?
I use 100 gr. Remington PSP Core Lokt's for everything from jackrabbits to whitetails to wild pigs. Works great on the bigger stuff. Makes a bit of a mess out of jackrabbits, though... Should work quite well on coyotes.

RE: is this possible?
im looking to save my first fur and after that it doesnt matter if i make a mess of the fur.

RE: is this possible?
Isnt shooting part of the fun???? You can record the clicks and just shoot one verification shot at the change....

RE: is this possible?
To answer your original question, it is highly unlikely that your gun will shoot both bullets with the same POI, since that is such a drastic change in bullet weight.
I think it's good advice to find something in the middle that your gun will shoot well for both. |
RE: is this possible?
What is the issue? If one sights in the 55 for 300 yards, the gun is sighted in for the 100 at what, 200?
I have the feeling that I am missing something? You can't just shoot the 100 and figure out what distance the sighting is good for? It seems like one would want the 100 to be sighted in for a shorter distance regardless. |
RE: is this possible?
What is the maximum distance you will shoot with either bullet?
And I have heard a number of posters that have an affection for the .243 say that they use an 85 or 87 grain bullet for everything. Maybe that would be the ticket for you. |
RE: is this possible?
Unfortunately it doesn't work that way.
When you are talking about high velocity rifles and various weighted bullets, the rate of twist in your barrel will determine how heavy of a bullet your gun will "stabilize". For instance, if you have a slow rate of twist in your barrell (i.e. 1 in 14 or slower), your gun will shoot lighter bullets much more accurately than it will heavier bullets. If you have a fast rate of twist (i.e. 1 in 8) it will stabilize heavier bullets much more effectively. With the 2 bullets you discribedbeing so far apart in weight, more than likely your gun will not shoot both bullets well, much less have the same POI. I've seen guns shoot heavier bullets with a POI that is higher than a lighter bullet. I don't know that I have an explanation for that but I have seen it. |
