From taking a quick look at comparing different cartridges the 270 WSM is pretty comparable to the 7mm Mag except the 7mm mag has heavier bullet choices and is more popular.
From looking at the differences between the regular 270 and the WSM version it doesn't look like it would be worth it to me. The 270 has been around forever, and will always be, the WSM, maybe, maybe not.
Just for giggles I compared all the WSM rounds with their little brothers and they all get you about 100-200 fps faster speeds with the same bullets.
I have never shot all these types of rifles though, would there be any reason the 270 WSM might have less felt recoil than a 7mm mag? If it does that may be a reason to go with one over the other. Except I hardly every feel recoil when hunting.

I like the fact of the short casing. Makes chambering a round a little quicker and is supposed to be more accurate due to a short more equal powder burn.. I wouldn't see the need to have a 270 and 270 WSM in the same safe. I think if you give the Short Mags a few more years the customers will weed out the ones they want to keep. My guess is the 243 WSSM, 270 WSM and 300 WSM will be around.I also like the 25 WSM and 325 WSM..

I purchased a .270wsm last year after shooting the same .308 for 26 years...The recoil is about the same as the .308...the Shorter action does allow for quicker follow up shots but this thing is so accurate I haven't needed a follow up shot...The short actionshave always beenknown for their accuracy, that is why the Military has always used .308's as sniper rifles...My Tikka loves Federal 130 grnpower points at $22.00 a box...and I did just buy a box of Remington Core Lokts for $24.00...I guess I could spend $40.00 a box if I wanted to...I've shot both the.270 win and .270 wsm and I think the wsm has noticeblyless recoil then it's big brother.

As far as comparing the 270's to the 7mm rem mag, the rem mag is superior when hunting larger then deer due to bullet offerings(especially if your not a reloader).
