RE: shawnee nat. forest
The last two years I have gotten bucks on public shawnee land...not huge but I am not really a trophy hunter. There are a lot of big animals...a lot of hunting ground and public land. Shawnee is such a large area that is hard to say from one place to the next but there is obviously a lot of prime hunting locations...just takes some ground work to scout some prime locations.

Itchyfinger, you are on the right track. I have been hunting Hardin County for years, which is the next county East of Pope and there are tons of deer and a good chance for big bucks through out the Shawnee. In my experience the locals are not going to be much help. Don't be afraid to try, but don't be surprised if they aren't much help. Decide what Counties you are interested in, get some topo maps and get up here and scout as much as you can between now and next fall.

We hunted around baycity the last couple yrs. Even with a topo map and the cabin owner it was very hard to know if it was public or private. Really nothing is marked very good on some of the roads we were on. We did find some closer places that he knew we could hunt, not much after that. With a little leg work hopefully its better next year!

Hey! I'm a local in Hardin Co. who hunts the Shawnee quite a bit. I'm always happy to help anyone out I can. As far as knowing what you can hunt and can't hunt, get a plat map book from the local courthouse. It's pretty clear on showing what is public and what isn't.
