RE: When to look for Antler Sheds?
Best time to look for antlers is when they are still on the deer!
But after the season closes and there's nothing else to do, go to where you may have jumped bucks earlier in the year. The best time is soon after they fall off. If you wait too long the mice and other rodents get on them and start chewing them up. As far as best time, It depends on your location. Around here we can start shed hunting usually in february. Some of the alpha bucks tend to losse theirs earlier if they have had a tough season. A woman shot what she thought was a large doe one year in December. It turns out it was a large buck that had laready dropped his antlers. If we had deep snow cover we usually wait till the snow starts melting. The antlers retain heat and melt the snow around them and they stick out well. Mark those locations where you find them, as they are typically bedding areas the deer go to when the hunting pressure gets heavy. They are good places to hunt next year when the pressure gets on again. |
