In the early season, I have found nothing works like a fawn bleat. I have had success with "the can" during the rut.

The "can" works great during the rut. But like one guy said earlier a fawn bleat early on works well.

RE: calling?

Early is light contact calling. Just the quiet burrrrr in the morning around 7-9am.
Let em know it safe. Mid season, start grunting (True Talker)and bleating (Can).
More adult talk. Rut- start grunting regular mixing with overlapping can bleating.
Start rattling a couple times an hour to draw in cruising bucks. But when you rattle
don't think there just going to run you down. Deer are still spooky and might hang
up downwind at fifty to seventyfive yardsconfirming the fight. Post rut go down to
just bleating.
