RE: .44 pistol distances ?
I have used my colt Anaconda 44 magnum with a red dot scope for deer. I have mine sighted in for 50 yards. I'm using Hornady 240 grain factory ammo. I shot a small buck a few years ago at about 50 yards with no problem. I wouldthink you'd be more limited by the distance you can accurately shoot the gun at then the guns limits. My gun is accurate out to 100 yards, but it takes a steady aim on my part to be consistent at that range. The load I use has 685 foot pounds of energy at 100 yards which should be enough to take a deer. I personally wouldn’t shoot that far, but I believe you can take a deer at that range with practice.

44 mag with 265 grain slug leaving the barrel at 1350 fps will still have enough energy(1000 Ft pounds for deer size game) at75 yards. I would keep shots to under 75 yards unless you are very good at longer ranges.

RE: .44 pistol distances ?
I pretty much agree with Remnard. My Super Redhawk shoots 1 inch groups at 50 yards with my 240 grain XTP handloads. I sighted it in 1 inch high at 50 yards, and call 75 yards my limit. 100 yards is a streach, but doable, with a rest and perfect conditions and lots of practice that year. In reality I hunt with it like I am bowhunting, in fact mostly in my bow stands, but I also like to carry it when trailing deer.
