RE: good deer rifle to buy
i am looking seriously at the remington 700 sps now. in either .270 or .30-06. the gun is in a youth model, but comes with a free adult stock, all for 399.99 on sale at cabelas. will switching out the stock have any effect on the gun? also, the guy at cabelas said that the .270 is not that great a caliber for varmint, something about accuracy. Any comments on this? and is this a good gun?

Get the Savage....I won 2 rifle matchs with mine aganist the Marine
Corps 2 years in a row....Rugers ARE JUNK--Remington is a close second.. For the bucks YOU can't beat a Savage rifle....Wetherbys are nice but they sure aint worth the price for what you get...I wish I had my Savage when I was in the war......Go SAVAGE........ |

RE: good deer rifle to buy
I have a 700 Remington ADL .270 that I've had for 34 years. It is a great gun. If I had it to do over again I might get a .243 cal. It's plenty good for deer and a better caliber for varmints. The Savage is a good gun for the money, but just not the same quality.

ORIGINAL: fishin13rocks well thanks for the advice, but id really like info on the rem 700 if anyone has any. and which would be better for deer and varmint, the .270 or .30-06? The .270 and the .30-06 will both perform well on deer and varmints (although they are definitely "overkill" for varmints...). Based upon walking up and down the line at the shooting range a few times, I think the .270 might be slightly more popular in Texas. If, like most of us in Texas, you plan to hunt out of a blind, I'd definitely consider a "short action" cartridge. Even that inch difference will make manuevering the rifle into shooting position easier. If you are looking for something a little more potent than a .243, I'd seriously give the 7mm-08 a look. |

that's awesome ipsc, I live in San Antonio. I'm new to deer hunting, always have hunted dove. What do you mean by short action cartridge?

RE: good deer rifle to buy
I have a Rem 700 in 30/06. I have had the gun for about 10 years. Its been through hundreds of rounds, killed I dont know how many deer (and countless other things). Its got an $80 scope on it with cheap mounts. I am comfortable shooting a deer with it a bit over 300 yards. It kicks a bit hard for shooting varmits, ammo is a bit more expensive than 243 or 270. A trigger job is a must, most gun shops will do it cheap, or if you are mechanically inclined, you can find instructions to do it yourself online.

ORIGINAL: fishin13rocks you would take the savage over the remington? I'm editing this to say I have nothing against the remington guns, I am in no way saying they are junk, or bad. I just like Savage guns is all. I feel performance wise they are equal for less money in most cases. The only difference will be in fit and finish, and they have some pretty nice looking Savages if you want to spend more money. I own a 700 inline muzzle loader and am happy with it, it's a pain to clean compared to others, but it is plenty accurate. Paul |
