would you kill a doe
If a doe were standing 20 yards awaywould you shoot or wait for a buck.

RE: would you kill a doe
don't have a choice where i hunt in Wisconsin it is earn a buck so i have to shoot a doe first
|
RE: would you kill a doe
Of course. Meat is meat. If one came out with a buck I'd take the buck first sure. But I wouldn't hesitate to take a doe.
|
RE: would you kill a doe
Also, by limiting the number of doe's on your land you intinsify(sp) the rut. Rut is less agressive when the doe to buck ratio is higher.

RE: would you kill a doe
Shoot the Doe then the Buck.Done it a couple time.

RE: would you kill a doe
i have two tags! one antlerless, and one either sex. i have no specifications on which tag i fill first!

RE: would you kill a doe
If a doe were standing 20 yards awaywould you shoot or wait for a buck. In FL you have to be awarded Doe tags and Bucks have to have antlers 5" above the head!:) |
RE: would you kill a doe
I think there needs to be more to it than that. Do you have just one either sex tag? Is it the first day of hunting season? Do you live in an area with an excessive number of deer or an area with a high ratio of does per buck?
I have 2 doe tags that I could use and I saw 2 does that I could have shot last week but I didn't because I actually think I have more bucks than does currently and haven't seen any signs of habitat destruction due to overpopulation of deer. |
RE: would you kill a doe
absolutely. Its good deer management and they taste good!!
|
RE: would you kill a doe
yea i got 2 doe tags this year and 1 antlerless deer tag, so in totall i can bring down 3 does this season which would be really hard
|
RE: would you kill a doe
Loaded question. During the first week or even the first ten days of our 14 day gun season it would be a no. why? Well you never know if mr. granddaddy buck is followin her to try and get his groove on. Wouldn't want to miss the opportunity to shoot him. Now, during that last four or five days of gun season I might become desperate if I havent seen anything by then. A doe might look just tasty. During muzzleloader season, what the heck, I'ld be selective, the younger the doe the more tender the meat, but I'd shoot one if it crossed my path.

RE: would you kill a doe
We can take five bucks and get four tags for "antlerless" deer. Antlerless is less than two inches of antler above the hairline, regardless of sex. You have to buy two tags at once, $5 each, but you can get two at any time or all four at once. I'd not only shoot that doe, I'd shoot three others that walk out. Antlers may be nice, but you can't eat 'em and I'm a meat hunter. I don't kill everything that walks past, but I'm not a trophy hunter either.

I have taken 7 does and one buck this year, will probably take a few more does and maybe one more buck as well...I lay off the does during the rut.

RE: would you kill a doe
Of course i would shoot a doe like almost everybody else said and they also taste yummy on t he smocker!!!! Iv harvested 2 this year with my bow!
|
RE: would you kill a doe
It just depends where you hunt. On my place, I could shoot a doe just about any time of day so if I'm looking for bucks, I don't shoot. Since I'm pretty picky about my bucks, I do as much as I can to maximize my potential for seeing a buck.
We get 5 tags in Texas of which 3 can be used for does. I take does based on what kind of season I'm having. I hunt three counties, so I may take up to 3 bucks (one in each county). However, the last weekend of the season, I go to whichever place I think needs some management and use whatever tags I have left to shoot does and spikes. |
RE: would you kill a doe
If you want to see more bucks, thin the does, so he will go cruising....;)
|
RE: would you kill a doe
;)
Here in Oklahoma they revamped the regulations again this year to 6 deer total with only 2 bucks and 4 doe total. This is due to the fact that to many people are shooting bucks only and they are trying to get a better management plan in place. Besides that -- a Doe taste just as good or better at times than a Buck does -- Especially if you haven't seen any Bucks yet!!:) |
RE: would you kill a doe
I am a meat hunter first, does`nt matter to me.

RE: would you kill a doe
Horns mean nothing to me. Yes, if I have a shot at a full-grown doe at 7:30 AM of opening day I'm taking the shot. Does eat a lot better than bucks. I am not a trophy hunter. I enjoy the many aspects of hunting, butthe basic function is to take an animal home to eat. I may regret that my hunt might be over so early, but I've also gone through a whole season without a shooting opportunity.
It used to be that deer populations were low and only bucks were allowed to be taken, on the understanding that -- within reason -- taking bucks did not affect populations (the surviving bucks would just have to do double duty servicing the does to keep the birthing train rolling, a burden which the surviving bucks are only too happy to accept). Today when constraining deer populations to target levels is important, very often shooting does is not only permitted but encouraged, witness the "earn a buck" program the second respondent cited. |
RE: would you kill a doe
I intend to harvest quite a few does. I'll worry about the buck when I see the Buck and until then it's all about the freezer.

RE: would you kill a doe
