Yes it did do it's job. The way it works is you lay the deer on its side and slide the device into the rectum. You then give it a few twists and pull it out. I will say that it was not quite as easy to pull out as the video on hunters specialties website makes it look, but its really not difficult. It may become that easy with practice. You then cut off the intestines from the outside of the deer. You do all this before you start the rest of the gutting process. Then when you start pulling things out from the inside it makes it a lot easier because you don't have to stick you knife point around the intestines from the inside and the bladder and all those other things you really don't want to pop. I would recomend the product.

As far as how nasty it was goes it wasn't too bad. After you cut the intestines there is an intestine ring around the product right where it catches them to pull them out. It is very simple to scrape this off with your knife though. The tool is plastic too so it's very simple to wash. I hope this answered your questions.
