shot placement
Been bow hunting a few years and now starting to fire arm. I know with a bow your shot placement should be behind the shoulder. My question is this: given the use of a shotgun, do you still aim behind the shoulder? What if you are presented with a quartering too shot? Just want to have all the bases covered if presented with this situation.

RE: shot placement
wait for a broadside or quartering away shot. if you choose to shoot anyway, aim at the very point of the shoulder. aiming behind the shoulder will result in a gut-shot deer, and maybe at best, one lung.

If you're shooting a firearm, you can shoot quartering away, broadside, quartering toward, and directly toward. All of those are legitimate and ethical shots. Just imagine a line from where you aim to where it would exit and make sure that line passes through the vitals.
I've heard of people saying that shooting straight up the rear of a deer will bring it down from massive bleeding but it's a guaranteed gut shot not to mention a slower kill and almost universally considered unethical. (Don't do it!)

RE: shot placement
If you shotgun hunt like you bow hunt, I think you'll have some really good luck. I've been usin a shotgun for deer for 14 yrs and have killed plenty of deer. You can still aim for the same place but as others have already said you have different shot opportunities now.

Me I like to play with Shot Placement, thinking in my mind where that Bullet or Arrow is going. Some shots people say they wouldn't take but they have worked for me.
I was walking to the House one time, had a Buck running towards me flat out.I was using a Sidelock Muzzleloader,Patch and Ball.I didn't have time to think, all I did think was aim Low,I shot him 10 yards,he piled up at my feet. The ball went just to the side of the Shoulder Blade, out the Ham on the other side.
Broad Side,Heart,Lung is the best.
