That was not too early to do preseason scouting and check for rubs. However, rubs tell us mostly one thing, that a buck was there. That doesn't necessarily mean that buck will return to that exact rub. If you locate a rub early on, that is good, it's a sign that a buck is in your area. Now you must look a little deeper and determine the line if travel of said buck and either backtrack to see where he came from or follow on to see where he is going. This may indicate his bedding and or feeding area or if one was just passing through. In all instances, be sure not to spread human oder around and if you've located a scent post ( a rub bucks will frequent as a sign to other bucks as territory) be sure not to touch it or contaminate it with human oder. Pressure early on could push a buck out of your area.

Here in WI, they don't start rubbing heavily until late Oct. Usually the rubs you see earlier are made by young bucks. The big boys save their energy for when it counts.
