Please don't bite my head off but, I live and hunt in a area that has die hard dog hunters in it. We have clubs that are anywhere from 25,000 to 100,000 thousand acres. Not every one is as lucky as we are for that very reason. I am a still hunter because my daddy never dog hunted. My wife and her family have run dogs for 60 years. My 4 year old son loves to dog hunt to the point that just tonight I have picked up 2 dogs for him this weekend while hunting with his poppa. I guess what I am babbling about is that we can all enjoy outdoors the way we want if everyone would practice more respect for the fellow hunter. I have seen people dump a box full of dogs on top of a spot where someone is trying to still hunt and that is wrong. But I have also sat in a tree with deer feeding under me and have a pack of dogs run by and it not bother them at all.
I am one of those die hard dog hunters in north florida. Some don't realize it is much different in our area than where they are from. Running deerdogs is a way of life for me and most of the guys I hunt with feel the same way.

This is obviously a very emotional subject.
I do have to say getting back to the shooting a dog on private property issue. Here in NC you will see dog boxes in many trucks and cages in their back yards. The cages are 3x3 and the dog sits there all year until deer season until they even come out. They are throw away dogs to most here so I don’t want to hear how important the dog is to them.

Hunting is different from running dogs. I carry a treestand, back pack and gear for anything that might come up. And hump it far from roads. The other day I was on my way out and there are the dog people covered in orange, fat outa shape, standing on the road waiting in trucks for dogs to bring them in. YOU CAN’T CALL THAT HUNTING.

Next time call the Game Warden or the Sheriff if somebody is continually tresspassing. I used to live in NWMO and know how some people think they are the law.
exactly...

I grew up hunting deer with dogs with my Dad and brotheron a 4000 acre club. I still go occasionly just to enjoy hearing the dogs run, see lots of deer and having good times with fellow hunters. It truly is an experience like no other. Now I wouldn't call it hunting per sey. It's more geared toward comraderieand fun than anything else. But it is a time honoured tradition that still lives on and I for one am happy it does.

I no longer hunt this way very often anymore, but because of my upbringing in it, I find I have better memories of the dog hunting camp than anywhere. Too many people today are caught up in horn porn, expensive leases, property rights, etc. and that's largely why the tradition has suffered. I wish we could all get along as Americans and respect and enjoy things and not make everything into another controversy. I am sure that many of you deep down feel the same way!

You're right. Hunting with dogs is a different sport altogether. I still or stand hunt about 80% of the time myself.

If you want challenging, then still hunting for coons, possums, squirrels, etc is more difficult than dog hunting them. It's just not as much fun. Dog hunting tends to be a much more social event, and some people really enjoy that. I just love to see and hear the dogs work.

BTW, in high pressure areas, dog hunting or making drives results in far more "big deer" kills. The big deer don't get big by moving around voluntarily during the daylight hours.

I am sure that most feel that way. The problem is that it seems that while you talk about "respect", there are quite a few dog hunters who use the "they hunt by instinct and I can't control where they go" excuse as a reason to habitually violate other people's property rights. The way you have framed your argument, it seems as though you believe that if a landowner doesn't want his property rights violated by trespassing dog hunters, then that landowner is not properly respecting you and is not properly allowing you to enjoy your form of hunting. You seem to want a one-way street here. You want the landowner to recognize and respect running dogs, but you don't want to recognize and respect his property rights.

You mention "property rights" as though wanting them respected is a bad thing. I have to disagree. A landowner's property rights trump trespassers' rights every time.

I live and hunt in Wv most of the hunters I know if they see a dog running a deer would pass on the buck and shoot the dog. I have saw dogs run a deer to death and I dont agree with it. I lived in NC for about 5 years where they hunted with dogs and I know not all hunters are the same but the farm I hunted the guy told me to shoot any dogs I saw on his land. I didnt but I did get to see some dog deer hunting. The men that hunted with dogs there sit in the back of a pickup some even in a recliner with a table beside it with their coffee or whatever on it with a walkie talkie while the drivers of the dogs would tell them which way to look for the deer to come. Yes I know to some thats a lot of fun and I have always believed to each his own but there is no way that I and I did say I can look at that as fair chase at all. I also know that we should stick together as hunters as we have enough going against us as it is but NO I dont think it should be legal but in some states it is I just think God it isnt here.

All about "fair chase" are you? So you hunt with a spear? Because if you hunt with a gun or modern bow, then that's just not right. Give 'em a chance, man.

Now, let me find my slingshot..............it's here somewhere..........

I've hunted with dogs for 30 years and have NEVER seen a dog chase a healthy deer to death. Ya'll got dogs on steroids up there?

Ive ran hogs with dogs, loads of fun chasing them in the woods all night, but the places we do it is own private property, where we have permission to be... sometimes we get permission from neighbors if we are going to be one are just encase the dogs take off through there land...9 times oiut of 10 they stay on family land....about 15,000 acres but just encase we still get permission or at least tell the folks we are going to run them on this night on our land....just to be on the safe side

I have seen some of the fastest, multi-champion foxpen dogs in the south and I have never seen a healthy deer ran down. Usually the deer are at least 200-300yds ahead of the dogs. The deer must have had something wrong with it.
