relieving ones self

I have heard, even on this forum, that relieving ones self in the woods will not scare off deer. It has even been said that deer will curiously come to such. Like making a mock scrape and relieving in it...

so my question... does this apply to public ground also?

here is my thought process: on private land without a lot of pressure deer may be curious, but on public with lots of hunters in the woods wouldnt the deer associate the human sent of urine with the danger of the hunting pressure and thus be repelled rather than drawn?

I hunt public, and travel a loooong way to get to my stand with climber and gear... would love to have one less thing to carry by ditching the bottle.

any thoughts?

I don't risk it... I bring an empty 1/2 gallon milk jug with me and keep it undermy seat in my stand...

once I had to piss REALLY bad when I got to my stand, I tried to hold it, but couldnt. So when I watered the tree my stand was on.... Climed back up the stand, blew my grunt call, 5 minutes later I had a big 8 pointer right under my stand, which happened to be my first ever buck. That happened when I was 15 i think.

When ya gotta go ya gotta go. I never saw where it spooked a deer. IPee in all my mock scrapes and the bucks soon take over.

I read once that the chemical make up of human urine is exactly the same as deer's. In other words they can't smell the difference. Don't know if this is 100% accurate though.

I know a fellow that pees in every scrape he finds. Says it makes the bucks use it more. Maybe, they think another buck is moving in on them. I've never personally done it.

I don't think urine bothers deer at all. I pee in scrapes sometimes too. I pee from my stand a lot.

easy enough for you guys..... i'm pretty sure tho if any deer saw my white behind out there they'd be running in the other direction! [&o]

I guess more to the point would be to put it like this:

do you think if 40 guys/gals are in a particular set of woods (1000 acres, only one access, land locked. everyone enters from that access)and they're pee'n all over would the deer percieve that to be danger? and if so and I pee from my stand will that drive the deer away from my area?

I know I am so far into the woods no one in their right mind would go that far. it is farther than I hunted last season and noone came as far in then, so I am fairly sure they wont this season either.

i agree with most people on this one...
i have been hunting 20 years and ive always pissed on the ground where i was.
and i have no problem hanging out the window of a blind and letting it fall....
i have never noticed it to bother them.

Also.. for 40 years, my dad smoked Cigarettes.
him and his friends would always Chain smoke in the Blinds, and yet they always killed deer.
my dad kills 1-2 bucks every year, and has over 10 deer mounted in the 150 - 160 B/C Range.
all while he smoked in the blind... But i DO NOT Reccomend this.. (nor do i reccomend smoking anywhere)
but also, as long as i can remember, they were up high in tower blinds where you get get away with a little more.
not quite like Bow Hunting a Game Trail...

I rifle hunter, w/ a 300 Mag.. 20 feet in the air..
w/ 200 yard Senderos can get away w/ ALOT more.

i dont necessarily let it fly from 25 feet up cuz all the noise it makes while hitting the leaves, but ill let it fly when im on the ground. doesnt seem to bother them.

Awildlife biologist told me that you could pisson any scrape or just make a mock scrape and piss in it andthe deer will not be able to tell the difference. He said that the nitrates in human piss are the only thing different from deer piss, and the nitrates either evaporate or are soaked up by the soil in just a couple of hours. He claimed that by pissing in another bucks scrapes, it would makebucks come check it more often looking for a fight.

But I still use a Gatorade bottle while in the stand. Pissing off a 25 ft high stand can be kinda noisy.

I take a leak in every scrape i see. The deer seem to visit the scrapes more often afterwards. Works like a charm, except when u see a new scrape and dont have to go.

I've mentioned this before.... A few years ago when snow was on the ground I walked out after hunting and had to piss. I went and when I came in the next morning there were deer tracks everywhere and a lot more yellow snow than I left the evening before. So wherever I'm at if I gotta go so be it. I've never thought of taking a leak in a scrape though. I got a fresh one about 20yds behind my stand, I might give it a try.

i've read several times that human urine does not spook deer and have urinated in all my mock scrapes to have them soon taken over .. i wouldnt worry about it too much.. i would worry more about the movement spookin an incoming deer the most.. i've always said that if you havent seen a deer on stand.. just stand up to use the bathroom and you are sure to have one standing behind you glaring right at you!

I've always heard that as well. I have never tried it yet, but I will this year. I have a lot of bucks in the area that I am hunting this year and would love to try it out.

Isn't that the truth. The last deer I killed I had to cut it short, put down my pee jug andpick up my gun. I probably looked like an idiot with my pants and thermals down around my knees.

I have "relieved" myself multiple times in my blind, too much coffee ussually...in fact on 2005 on the gun opener I shot a nice 7-point about 2 minutes after I pissed in my blind.... ( I have a natural blind with logs and dirt floor)

I always thought that If I pee in the woods I might as well hang it up for the day,but just a week ago I was getting ready to leave the woods and had to go real bad.About the time I got my pants zipped I heard something walking in the leaves. It was 2 deer and they walked within 20 yds of me and had no idea I was even there, that is untill I let an arrow fly and missed and hit my truck!

hey guys I'm new to the forum but yes urinating in the woods doesn't bother the deer. Urine is made up of ammonia so when all the chemicals break down all that is left is ammonia.

I think that I am going to e wearing depends when I get older because when I get the feeling I have to go. I pee 3 times before lunch and usually 3 times after lunch and I do not think that it has bothered the deer at all. I have killed deer off of the ground and out of a treestand that I had peed near.

Inever used to pee in the area of my stand, but now if I gotta go, I just pee right off the stand. I figure its better than squirming around up there.

I just don’t drink anything in the mornings except for 1 red bull. I stopped drinking coffee before a hunt because of the large volume of liquid. It’s not that I’m worried so much about scent … I just hate having to take a leak after I’m all setup in the popup blind or tree stand. There’s lots of movement and noise no matter how you do it. Plus with my luck that would be when the big buck decides to walk by and as the old saying goes … I would be caught with my pants down.

after all of these pisser's advice....:D If your still not comfortable peeing in the woods. Do like me, I bring a gallon ziploc freezer bag with me. I pack my lunch in it, and when I'm done eating, I've got an empty bag to piss in. Won't leak either, even in my Pouch. (use the one with the zipper...);)
