RE: Rub on a hardwood vs. a pine?

It's been My observation over the years, in My hunting area, that each buck has it's own preferences, just like humans. Some folks like cars and others like trucks. Some folks like boxers, others like briefs. Etc., etc., etc. Deer are the same. Each one has it's own personality. For instance; the 8 point that I shot last year just loved to tear the heck out of hemlock trees. He tore up over 2 dozen in his territory, that I know of. The 8 point that I was going after this year (and didn't get) had a preference for maple and birch. And He didn't do much damage to the higher limbs like the 8 I got last year. He just liked to expose that inner bark on the trunks of small trees.

RE: Rub on a hardwood vs. a pine?

Probably just a territorial preference. It seems to me that the bucks that are taken from areas that are dominated by redcedar and pine rubs have the darker stained antlers while those that come from hardwood bottoms have the lighter shaded antlers. Makes sense I guess.
