A 243 is a necked down 308 case. The powder charge is relitively the same, but recoil is slightly less because of the lighter bullets. I love 243's for varmint and deer. Unless you are very small framed or have a health issue, the 243 is less recoil then you can handle. What rifle did you buy? MAKE,Model,Ect.

RE: 243 deer hunting
I hunted with a 243 win. Handi-Rifle for 4 years. Killed 13 deer with it over the course of that time and about 30 coyotes. Great little gun. Actually just sold it last week to buy a new rifle for firearms season in Indiana. They don't kick too bad. Killed deer out to 300 yards with em.

I shoot a 7MM RM and .308 Winchester, but my next gun will be a .243 or a
6 MM Rem. if I can find one! Some say they are too light, but I had a 6MM Rem. that I foolishly sold! Killed 'em just as dead as the 7MM or .308!
