RE: CHECK OUT THESE BUCKS... This is MANAGMENT !!

its several thousand acres, so its perfect for managment.
its been strictly managed for Many, Many years.
Even some of the few "managment cull bucks" are huge.
its in Frio Co.. near pearsall.
Low Fence Ranch!!

Sorry i cannot post a MAPcannot give exactly Latitude/Longitude Coordinance !! haha
:)

RE: CHECK OUT THESE BUCKS... This is MANAGMENT !!

The bucks above are on a ranch where there is a 12 point minimum for trophy shooters.
but there is some good quality "managment bucks" that get shot quite often.
1 of these managment bucks must be shot 1st, before we can even begin looking for a Trophy shooter.
so, with a 12 point minimum... its a good oppertunity to WATCH alot of Big 8s and 10s like some of the ones above...
which is why there was PICTURES Taken of them ALIVE !!!

This is 1 from another place, Near Poteet Tx.
Just outside San Antonio.
this is not a Managed Ranch, and i have only killed Average bucks there.
but this is one coming to my feeder this year. he might be a little young.
but for a small peice of property with unmanaged ranches all around... he might be a good shooter if i get a good look at him.

RE: CHECK OUT THESE BUCKS... This is MANAGMENT !!

I have a buddy with some family land in Poteet, we hunt there once every year but never see bucks to shoot, a few does and fork horns is about all we ever see. Lots of strawberries to bring the hogs in:D
Do you usuaslly get a trophy on the Frio place? I'd have a hard time passing on a mature 10 pointer.

RE: CHECK OUT THESE BUCKS... This is MANAGMENT !!

i have not been to the Frio Countyplace in a few years, butim going next year.
I have not killed a trophy there... but a few nice Managment Bucks.
i passed up a Nice one about 7 years ago.. had More Mass than all of the above bucks.
Flat Palmations on the curves, but he was only about 16" wide.
i passed because his 12th point was only about 3/4 of an inch... "not an actual point"
it was very hard for me to pass.

But i guess for my Dad and the other guys who hunt the place Every weekend or every year its not a big deal.
its not uncommon to see several 8's and Big 10's like the ones above.. in 1 weekend or even 1 day.
so i assume they pass on them without regret.
(the fact that there used to seeing them and that they have plenty monsters on there wall already)

RE: CHECK OUT THESE BUCKS... This is MANAGMENT !!

Jkelly... the Poteet buck above is on a small pc of property North Of Poteet.
Between Poteet and Loop 1604.
I might have to take this guy this year, biggest buck ive seen on that place.
I killed 3 bucks on the place last year....
older 10 Point... and decent 8 point (should have let live, appeared older and biggerin the sunlight)
and also a 4 point, with curled down points.
i think this year i will not kill any bucks there, unless its Possible the 1 above.. or Bigger.

South Texas is known for it deer and a lot of people go down into south Texas to hunt them. There are a LOT of game ranches with and without high fences. I wish those type of deer would make their way up to the part of Texas I live in! Those are some very nice lookin bucks!

take an animal, any animal, protect it, feed it high protein foods, supplemental foods etcand it will grow bigger than it would under "normal" wildlife conditions

they grew some really big deer there for sure, I wonder if a rattle of the feed bucket woulnd't bring them in ?

He's a nice buck, might be nicer next year but if your place is anything like where I hunt in Poteet he won't make it to next year, nice looking "chocolate" horns. The place I hunt down there is just West of Poteet, about 10 minutes away, it is mostly pasture and strawberries but there are some woods along the pasture where there are a few deer living. Maybe I will get lucky down there this year

RE: CHECK OUT THESE BUCKS... This is MANAGMENT !!

BIG DUANCE.....

No Feed Bucket calling them here !!
its Several Thousand Acres .. Low Fence..
HEAVILY HUNTED during deer season.
80% of Deer killed are for Managment. (Does and Cull Bucks)
so these big old bucks are no stranger to Gun Shots and watcing there friends and "Wives" HIT THE GROUND !!
i havent been out there in a while, but they try to kill 20 - 30 Does and Cull Bucks each year... before hunters qualify to trophy hunt... they must kill a doe and Cull first. I think this year there going to try to kill as many does as possible.

and your Right... Take any animal, protect it and feed it protein and it will grow Larger than it NORMALLY Would.
but it MANY Areas... the "normal bucks" are TINY LITTLE BASKET RACKS..
due to No , or Bad Managment and No Quality Genetics.

in MANY Cases... even a Fawn, brought up in a Safe Pen.. and Fed Protein... would be Lucky to EVER Score 120 B/C even at 6 yrs old.
there is lots of areas where 1 would be LUCKY to ever even SEE a 120 Class buck.

Look at my 1st picture... those YOUNG bucks with little racks..
Some Places where the Mature Bucks look like That !!

JIMRABY 10-24-2007 11:51 PM

RE: CHECK OUT THESE BUCKS... This is MANAGMENT !!

im going out there the 2nd weekend of November.
But to Qualify for a Trophy buck.. i must kill a doe and a Cull buck 1st.
(some of the CULL Bucks are MONSTERS... some are 6 and 7 pointers with racks like the Bucks above)
after i qualify, i can shoot a Trophy. 12 point Minimum.
which means we WATCH alot of HUGE 10 POINTERS.. like the ones in the pictures.
But, towards the end of December, they open it to 8 pointers for a couple weeks.
which is great.... on any given MORNING or EVENING... we could see 5 or 6 BIG 8's to choose.
the reason its not open to 8 pointers all year, is because EVERYONE would Kill a TROPHY BUCK the 1st and 2nd weekends.

RE: CHECK OUT THESE BUCKS... This is MANAGMENT !!

JIMRABY c'mon now man, I aint a rookie at deer managements. I bet on that several thousand acres you don't have but maybe 2-3 "trophy" bucks taken off of it every year, plus a handful of "culls" am I right ? I bet your feed bill totals in the thousands of dollars, not to mention the other costs of food plots, supplemental feeding, feeders, deer cams etc.

Is this a group or wealthy just having fun or are ya'll selling the bucks as hunts ?

Hate it ? No, its notcanned hunt, there is no hate there, just observing how good farming skills can result in larger than normal deer. Its not a secret you know .........

RE: CHECK OUT THESE BUCKS... This is MANAGMENT !!

ts Several Thousand Acres .. Low Fence..
So please tell us how this differs to a high fence? Can the deer leave the property? If they CAN'T it's then no different to a high fence and if they CAN why would you have any fence at all???

RE: CHECK OUT THESE BUCKS... This is MANAGMENT !!

My eyes could be playing tricks on me, but there seems to be a feeder calling them in that last picture. And no hating on this part, because I don't care if i ever shoot anything with antlers. But, i've got family that have hunted such managed operations in Texas and I know the routine.

okietreedude 10-25-2007 02:56 PM

RE: CHECK OUT THESE BUCKS... This is MANAGMENT !!

So whats the name of the place? Is it a 'hunting ranch' that sells hunts or what? How do I sign up or can I?

JIMRABY 10-25-2007 03:36 PM

RE: CHECK OUT THESE BUCKS... This is MANAGMENT !!

well this isnt my place.
its the ranch my dad hunts every year with several other people.
i dont go every weekend.
its all low, barbed wire fencing, sure they can leave whenever they want.
they are 100% wild deer, not tame in any way.
not pets, not "bredder bucks"
and no New deer have been introduced.
it just happens to be Large Amount of acres that has been Hunted and Managed over at LEAST the past 30 - 40 years.
and yes, there is deer feeders.
and yes, MOST Ranches w/ feeders.... the Learn the Sound of the feeder means food.
but more than often, they become acustomed to Knowing around what time in the morning and evening the feeders will spit food.
as is with ANY DEER and ANY RANCH w/ Feeders running. Deer arent stupid.

Steve... almost ALL property has "fences" wether it be High Game Fence, or simple Barbed wire.
also known as a "PROPERTY BOUNDRY"
and MOST large acreage ranches have at least some cattle.. as this Ranch has several hundred Cows.
this would be the reason for "why have a fence at all"

its not a Ranch that sells hunts, i think he donates some hunts to charity auctions every not and then.
but its mostly open to just the same group of hunters, for every weekend during the season.. every year.
and there guests.

But YES.. Bucks like this, DO EXIST on Low Fence, Free Range, Large Rances in South Texas.
if managed properly to secure the Majority of "large deer Genetics"
like i said, this place has been managed Strictly for over 30 years.
ill have to ask... but its probubly more like 50 years.

JIMRABY 10-25-2007 03:41 PM

RE: CHECK OUT THESE BUCKS... This is MANAGMENT !!

whats with the "skeptics" here??
you see bucks like this, and just have to belive they are "tame.. Breeding.. High Fence Deer" ????
i do understand, alot of people have never even seen deer like this.. and the average buck in alot of areas will not even score 100 b/c.
i understand this, ive hunted alot of areas like this.
the 1st few times i went to this ranch... i was seeing what i thought were monster 8 pointers.
come to find out.. those were the 2 1/2 year olds that were bigger than alot of Bucks in certain areas will Never get, even at 5 yrs

RE: CHECK OUT THESE BUCKS... This is MANAGMENT !!

You folks that don't hunt in Texas have to remember one very important difference from most of the other states ... we do not have public land that is assessible to any and all hunters. We do have a National Forest in East Texas, but you are just as likely to get shot yourself or run up on a meth lab as you are to kill a decent deer. Yes Texas hunters use feeders, how is that any different than sitting around a corn or bean field in any other state? People in Texas do actually hunt, we scout, we set up stands, we try to do more than just sit by a pile of corn and wait for the same buck we see everyday to come out and bust him. Granted there are lots of high fence ranches that will sell you the hunt of a lifetime ,but maybe (and this is an estimate from the hunters I know) maybe 1% of Texas hunters hunt a guided hunt, most of these ranches make there living off of fellows from the other 47 CONUS states. No anger or rant here just seems to be some real misconceptions out there on how things are done by the average Texas hunter. Good Hunting to all.

RE: CHECK OUT THESE BUCKS... This is MANAGMENT !!

Jim,

your dam right deer like this exist w/o the use of high fence.

I think anyone on here could get the same result w/ a piece of land 30,000 acres in size (not sure how big your place there is). Even 3000 acres could do this. LIke you said, it is strict managment w/ some supplemental feeding going on.

When there is a cattle operation in place as well, dont think the deer dont infringe on the high protein feed being placed for the cows. they will for sure help themselves.

I think the skeptics are those that are simply jealous because they dont have access. Sure, I dont either (yet:D), but I am a realist that things like this DO exist. And sure, Im jealous too that I dont have this kind of action, but it its what I wanted, Id put up the $ to buy myself one of those canned 'hunts of a lifetime'.

Keep up the pics. I like dreaming and knowing someone out there will get a biggun.

RE: CHECK OUT THESE BUCKS... This is MANAGMENT !!

My dad's cousins were true cowboys, they lived and worked on big south texas cattle ranches. This was before the big buck money enetered the picture. 1950's to the late 1970's. I use to go as a kid with him and seen deer like this before. My dad killed them by the truck loads. NO management or supplement feeding. Thats just a good south texas buck, they get that way on their own. Something about the minerals in south texas. All they need is age. The northern or central area of texas, ( hill country ) deer seem to be a bit smaller untill you do supplement feeding, then they can get like these pictured here, but not on their own.
South Texas is known for monster whitetails not just the mid west. I have hunted a WMA in south texas recently, it's a high fenced 15000 acre ranch managed by the state of Texas, no feeding, no young bucks and all the spikes. You should see the deer on this ranch. 200" is common, 140" 3 year olds all over the place. Like I said just give them age, no feeding is needed.
Heres one my nephew killed a few years back onan 80 acre lease we had at the time, this was in south texas.

RE: CHECK OUT THESE BUCKS... This is MANAGMENT !!

thats amazing that came from a small 80 place.
now.. the Big managed ranches, usually Hate.. or shall i say "Fear" the Hunting on the SMALL Ranches Surrounding there property... many of them Fence them off.
Some for more reason than other...
some Just get Mad that people on a Tiny Farm are killing the Same BIG BUCKS that are usually on THERE BIG RANCH.
and they get mad because they are bucks they FEEL belong to them.. and her some Little Guy on a little Ranch is killing there deer.
this is the wrong reason to get angry.

I think it would be OK to High Fence the Neighbors to cut them off.. if they are Killing Anything they see with No managment whatsoever.
but NOT OK to fence them off, just because you dont want them killing your Big Bucks.

the buck in your picture.. is a OLD .. MATURE .. TROPHY BUCK !!
and a GOOD KILL on any ranch.
But some people on small acreage farms, have no problem killing SEVERAL 2 year old bucks that have POTENTIAL to get this big by age 4 or 5.
i would estimate the buck in your picture to Score around 135
Now.. just imagine if your neighbors had killed him at age 2 ... when he probubly scored 90
how old do you think that 1 was? 4 1/4 ??

JIMRABY 10-25-2007 11:56 PM

RE: CHECK OUT THESE BUCKS... This is MANAGMENT !!

even 30,000 acres .. a High Fence ... and High protein .. Will not produce ALOT of big Bucks like these..
without Strict Managment on the hunters, it will not happen.

Couldnt say for sure how old he was but mature none the less, we figure at least 4 1/2.
He had 12 scorable points and netted 153 by one and 149 by another

RE: CHECK OUT THESE BUCKS... This is MANAGMENT !!

Regular Ranch Fence.. DOES NOT KEEP DEER IN.. by any means.
4 or 5 strands of barbed wire only serves as a purpose to keep Cattlein and provide a property boundry line.
Deer Hop, or go under these fences with no problems at all.
actually.. even full grown cattle have NO PROBLEM jumping over a regular Barbed wire fence.
i see it alot. they just normally Dont, because they have no reason to and there not Afraid of Humans.
But i have watches Large Cows just Hop right over barbed wire fences.
as a matter of fact, im having that problem with the neighbors cattle every day this week since i put up my deer feeder.
they hop over, to get to the corn. and Knock my feeder over.

one will spend several hours looking for a broken fence, when cows are out.
when many times.. its not broken anywhere

JIMRABY 10-26-2007 10:50 PM

RE: CHECK OUT THESE BUCKS... This is MANAGMENT !!

ill be going down the 2nd weekend of November.
but ill have to kill a Cull buck 1st.. (less than 8 points at 4yrs+) .. (Spikes, 6" of longer) .. (or any buck with Obviously Deformed antlers)
sometimes these less than 8 point bucks, can have very Big Racks !!
but after i kill a cull, i can then hunt a trophy.
trophy is Buck of 12 point Miniumum... (which is why you see the MONSTER 10 Point bucks in pictures, still alive)
Later in December, 8 point bucks are allowed... if a qualifying Cull buck has been killed 1st.
the reason the 8 points are no allowed the 1st half of the season, is because EVERYONE who hunts there... could kill a BIG 8 in the first 2 weekends.
on any given weekend... there will be Several 8 point Bucks within range.. scoring 130+
