Well, this encounter was weird.
Hey all,
Went out for the start of muzzle loader season this past saturday morning here in northeast Louisiana. I got into my tripod at 5:30am, and at 8:00am, a medium sized doe walks out and I put her down. After I tracked her down, gave thanks toGod forher, I headed back to camp. After getting back to my camp, I put my atv with the deer strapped to it in the back of my truck, and left for home, which is about a 50 mile drive. Now, in the area I'm driving through, dead deer on vehicles or trailers is a common sight. While driving, I noticed this woman pull up behind me, lean forward in her car, narrow her eyes and start staring at my deer. After a few seconds of staring, she yanks out a cell phone and starts talking and still staring at my deer. So, I slowed down a bit, just to see if she would pass me, but she never did. She stays with me the entire time. When I get within 10 miles of home, I glance in my rear view mirror, and she's got a camera out taking pictures?!? I mean she's got it balanced on the steering wheel while right on my tail, snapping pictures. I can see it now, I'm gonna end up on a friggin peta website. |
RE: Well, this encounter was weird.
Yeah kinda weird. What part of north LA do you hunt in?I hunt in Richland Parish.
|
RE: Well, this encounter was weird.
I live in Monroe, but I hunt in Union Parish. The turnoff to my club is off of Hwy. 2 through Farmerville.
|
RE: Well, this encounter was weird.
Part of what should be learned in a Hunters Safety course is what NOT TO DO to anger the non hunters and anti hunters. One of those things is when transporting your kill to ATTEMPT to not DISPLAY it in such a manner.
She probably was offended by your transportation method. Was there another way you could have transported your deer......like in the bed of your truck while your atv was on the trailer or to cover it up with a tarp.....!! I'm not slamming you just wondering if you had thought about it! |
RE: Well, this encounter was weird.
No offense to PM69442 but it shouldn't really matter how he transported the deer. Its legal to shoot and kill deer and its legal to transport them. If he ends up on a PETA website then so be it but i highly doubt transporting a deer is going to get your hunting and gun rights taken away.
|
RE: Well, this encounter was weird.
you shouldnt have to hide your harvest!
congrats btw!!!! |
RE: Well, this encounter was weird.
It is his right to transport or "display" the harvest anyway he sees fit so long as it does not create a danger to anyone.
Now as to what "should be learned in a hunter safety course" is about the hunter interference/harassment laws. In this situation I would be so tempted to get out and walk back to her and tell her .......... "BACK OFF! IT'SMINE!GO GET YER OWN!!" |
RE: Well, this encounter was weird.
I'd watch the tree hugger sites and see if the picture shows up. Then if it does, look for identifying factors such as license plate and if there is anything like that, talk to a lawyer and sue em till they have nothing left.

RE: Well, this encounter was weird.
I would consider it an honor to be on PETA's site!
Congrats! :D |
RE: Well, this encounter was weird.
Although it shouldn't matter how you transport your deer, as long as it's safe, I have to side with PM69442 on this one. There are some ways to transport that are simply more 'respectable' to non-hunters that don't wanna see a dead deer strapped to an atv going down the highway. Mine are in my pickup bed, covered by the tonneau. I personally don't mind seeing it, but what about the little kids with non-hunting parents? They can be swayed to hate hunting if their only experiences are seeing dead animals strapped to trucks. I'd say next time, wrap it up (this would protect it from road debris as well) or place it where it cannot be seen so easily. It's fine to be proud, but not everyone wants to see a carcass on their way to work. We should respect that, I think. JMHO.

RE: Well, this encounter was weird.
Nothing wrong with being proud of the kill, but be respectfull of non hunters too. Lots of people are grossed out by a dead animal. Just like I am grossed out by two men kissing each other on the lips!

RE: Well, this encounter was weird.
If she was following behind me taking pictures, I would tap on my brakes to get her to back off. Thats just what I would do.

The guys who kiss each other on the lips don't hide it because I'll be offended. Therefore...... I'll show off my dead critters all day long. If I have to learn to accept others as they are.. then they will have to learn to accept me.

RE: Well, this encounter was weird.
In Kansas it's not legal to display any dead animal to the public, they must be covered
|
RE: Well, this encounter was weird.
And I don't take offense at your pride in wanting to display your deer.....but it helps me make my mind up on who I wouldn't go hunt with. It's just a matter of common courtesy and common sense......and............nuff said

Dead animals lay all over the roads across the US, yet this guy has to hide his legal kill? I think its this kind of attitude that has sensitized non hunters. Im not patronizing anyone. If you dont like the visual of my harvested animal, maybe think about where your next meal came from! |
RE: Well, this encounter was weird.
Kind of a childish attitude I think.

RE: Well, this encounter was weird.
I think that nowadays, with so many people on the fence about hunting, it's better to not display a dead deer in such a manner. Who knows? That could make up someone's mind about it. I know lots of people who wouldn't wanna see a dead deer and I'm sure you do too. Also it seems a little less respectful to the animal too, in my opinion.
On another note: Not trying to fuel the fire or anything but I have a question. To those that do transport deer like that, do you field dress them first? If so, does road debris and stuff get onto the cavity/in the meat? It seems like it would to me, depending on how it's laying. --B |
RE: Well, this encounter was weird.
Acceptance of others and their ways is childish? Most of us teach our children from a young age to accept a person as an equal regardless of skin color, religion, handicaps, or the fact that they may not be as smart as our children. Rightfully so... As a matter of fact, some of our forefathers gave their very lives to guarantee those RIGHTS to be an individual. I don't ask anyone to hide who they are, and I won't hide who I am, after all it is my RIGHT to be different from them. I chose to exercise my privilege to hunt (which incidentally I think should also be a RIGHT to do so). I don't ask anyone to agree with it, I merely ask acceptance. The same acceptance I afford them should be afforded me in return. That, after all, is what we teach our children right?

RE: Well, this encounter was weird.
What part of "Keep your kill low-key" did ya'll miss while growing up? That crap may have flown 50 years ago, but do it today and a cop or game-warden will pull you over in my state and educate you. While it is not illegal to transport a deer in the open, itshould be COMMON SENSEthat not everyone appeciates it.You guys parading carcasses around town on your atv or with the tailgate down are just begging to piss of someone who could've cared less about hunting last week. Please guys, brag at the processors or at the hunt camp.
|
RE: Well, this encounter was weird.
No one said he was bragging.I can't beleive some of you guys. You know what gays and lesbians offend me but i'm not going to tell you what you can and can't do. First its not being allowed to "display" your game while transporting and it snowballs from there. Unbeleivable.

Bad mood- "Here miss, allow me to hold it's head up so you can get a good clear photo....by the way, can you send me a copy of it?" |

Anyways, like said before, u can transport your kill any way you want! We always make sure the bucks heads are propped up on our trailer when we come back from hunting camp. Whats anybody gunna do or say about it to a bunch of hunters driving in lifted pickup truck? |
RE: Well, this encounter was weird.
Display the deer however you see fit.I am not going to cater to any non hunting or peta member because they don't like it.[&:] THIS IS AMERICA and I have freedoms,if they don't like it then don't look. This do gooder stuff and appeasers are almost comical. When youstart hiding your kill, you are playing into their hands. They are making it taboo to be a hunter and we are allowing it to happen with this crap.Be proud of your harvest and your contribution to the community. my 2 cents;) |

RE: Well, this encounter was weird.
I WOULD LOVE TO PROUDLY POSE FOR A PICTURE FOR PETA AND OTHER NON-HUNTER SITES.
I WOULD LIKE A GOOD PICTURE THOUGH... BIG BUCK, BIG SMILE !! MAYBE EVEN SOME LEFT OVER DRY BLOOD ON MY ARMS !! |
RE: Well, this encounter was weird.
EVEN GIVING THEM MORE AMMO AGAINST US.. WILL DO THEM NO GOOD.
I WOULDNT MIND DRIVING THROUGH A WHOLE ANTI-HUNTER RALLY WITH A DEAD DEER IN THE TRUCK. But, Maybe i am speaking this way because I LIVE IN TEXAS and I have no fear of EVER having any real problem with anti-Hunters and such. Perhaps in other states its a little more touchy. But thats a reason why I STAY IN TEXAS |
RE: Well, this encounter was weird.
Twice this happend...
Pulled over by a police officer for speeding. 1 of the times, i was doing 74 in a 55. (dont ask me why) 1 of those times i had a Dead Hog in the back, another time... it was just a bunch of Dried Blood in the back of the truck. TWICE this sparked a Friendly conversation about hunting.. (as we do here on the post) where do you hunt? see anything good? are they in the rutt now? alot of hogs out that way? and twice, i left without a ticket and without even a warning !! |
RE: Well, this encounter was weird.
I don't know about your laws on transporting game but, here in Maine it has to be in clear veiw and not covered. Up here covered = poached. Congrats on your critter(s)

After all you have a right to be left alone. JMHO |
RE: Well, this encounter was weird.
well... was she following very close behind you while taking pictures?
when they have a nice, newer model car, and looks like they got insurance..... i always love the ol "slam on the brakes" routine, its the best !! |
RE: Well, this encounter was weird.
Last Thursday evening as I was driving home, I saw a moped coming the other way down a street near where I live. As I got close, I saw he had a dead doe laying across the seat in front of him! I found it amusing - I wonder how the idiot behind you would have taken it?
|
RE: Well, this encounter was weird.
I hunt, and I don't always wanna see a bloody, shot up deer. I mean if its a doe cover up the whole thing. If its a buck leave the head out so I can stare at the antlers:D
