Just bought a Win SX3 12 gauge w/ Nikon Slughunter scope. Need an opinion on what is the best slug round to use that wont cost an arm and leg to buy...

I would say the ones that shoot the best out of your gun, get a few and try them out.

lifesadrag has got you headed in the right direction! i use an ithica 12 ga. and it wont shoot consistantly if i use Winchester, or Federal, but remington, wolf, and hornadys all go great thorugh it! but several, see what shoots the best!

Well Chapa, if it's a rifled barrell, sad truth is a good sabot round will run ya about $2.00- $2.50 a ROUND!. If you want a true 200 yard gun, I'd go w/ Hornandy. I believe they put out at about 2000 fps. Winchester Partition gold is another good one, at about 1900 fps. If your shots will be within 100 yards, I'd go w/ Litefields. They're a bit cheaper also, but pack a hell of a punch. I have yet to shoot a rifled barrell that doesn't like the Litefields. Check the trajectory charton the box, and practice, esp. if you plan on making it a long range shotgun. I've also found that the 2 3/4"shells group better than the 3".

Best I've found is Winchester BRI Sabot 2 3/4" 1 oz for rifled barrels. I haven't found a gun yet they don't shoot well in. They're about $9.00 for 5.

I always used to shoot Brenneke Rottweils with great success but would lose a little bit in accuracy in my rifled 20" 870 slug barrel. I now shoot the Hornady SST Slugs and they are about as accurate as you'll get, in my mind. The Federal Premium Barnes expander slugs are very good too, and they are all that my brother will use.

I also agree with ultra man. 3" ers usually pattern a little rougher than the 2-3/4" and the Hornady SST's were only available in 2-3/4" last year when they came out. Don't know about this year....

As some of the others have said, try as many different types as you reasonably can. Buy them one at a time until you find one that will give you acceptable accuracy at the distances you expect to be shooting. My 870 with a factory rifled barrel LOVES the Lightfield Hybrids. In my experience there is no such animal as a "cheap" sabot slug!

RE: 12 ga slugs question

The only way to really tell is to actually try the various offerings out there and those recommended by others is a good starting point. But two guns of the same make and model can like shoot their best with different slugs.

I am not a big fan of the high speed slugs. Three of my favorites for big knockdown power would be the Remington BuckHammers, Brenneke 3-inch Gold Magnums and Brenneke 2-3/4-inch Heavy Field Magnums. I think the first two are 1-3/8 ounce lead and the 2-3/4-inch is 1-1/4 ounce.
