wow! thanks everyone for the advice. I'm leaning towards whata lot of you said, a .243 w/ a limbsaver recoil pad. I also might just put a nice recoil pad on my .30-30 marlin. I just realized, i've shot 24 deer in my life but none with a rifle. This just might be my year!

for low recoil and deer I like a sks they use a 7.62x39 ballistically comparable to a 30-30 but alot less recoil.

Yeah, except that the SKS has a steel buttplate, and it makes what little recoil it has feel like a lot more than it is when shooting from the bench, but offhand, it wouldn't recoil too bad, I reckon, since your body can move with the recoil when standing up, or in the crouch position better than it can at a bech sitting down.

In any case, if I were to got the route of the SKS, I would change the butt of the rifle if I could.

I've got a Marlin 336CS 30-30 and I can say that it kicks way more (albeit not as much as others) than my .243. A .243 would be perfect, and with a recoil pad you'd barely even feel it.

Why the worry about recoil? Do you have shoulder problems? I don't understand people complaining about recoil all the time.I can shoot a .308 in a tee shirtand it doesn't bother me. I can see if you're shooting everyday like 50 shots, but if it's just for deer hunting, the recoil is nothing in my opinion.

I like to knock them down and stay down so i like the.30 calibers or magnums.

I've killed probably 30 deer with a .22 Hornet.

Have to hit them right though... depends on how comfortable you are with your ability to make a shot.

The 300 Savage is an effective round that might suit your needs & do a fine job in the field. Remington made some up in their 700 Classic line a few years ago, they weren't real popular, so price is good on them, and darn little recoil.
