Thats a great gun for deer. There are lots of great calibres for deer, i personally use a 30.06 but i also use it for elk and moose and the 30.06 has a great range of bullets thats why i like it. You can use the .270 for deer, coyotes, and even up to elk and black bear. So i think you made a wise choice.
I too use the 30-06 for the same reasons, versatility! Great caliber!
But, I have several hunting buddies that use .270 and its works great for deer!

.270 is what I shoot and it works just fine. Also does a number on the hogs as well.

I use the remington 7600 carbine in 30-06. Its a great gun especially for still hunting and or tracking. 270 is a great caliber as well but in the thick woods I hunt I like a heavier bullet.

.270 is perfect (that is what I shoot inAL, GA and SC). As well, a .243 is a nice rifle (less kick) which I have used on many occassions. To get better and more specfic suggestions post what and where you will mostly be shootingfor example, Wyoming and Elk. The suggestions will bedifferent than if you said Georgia and Whitetail.
