winter wheat

I just planted some winter wheat. Do deer eat wheat?

Very good deer food. When it matures in July, disc it down and you will get "volunteer wheat" comming up from the wheat seeds. A dose of fertilizer is always good. The deer will come back into the new growth volunteer wheat. You get two years of food plot for one price. We plant clover the spring of the third year, then back to wheat in the fall.

Disc it down a week before dove season and you have a dove field.

Should start greening up in a week. Are wheat fields a hot spot all season long?

I would say yes......we tend to hunt our wheat in the evenings. As you can guess the deer will come to feed just prior to dark. In the mornings we hunt the trails coming off the wheat headed to bedding areas. During our late bow season (December)wheat isgood because the deer are trying to re-coop from the rut and put weight back on before the hard winter.

Also, a good fall / winter food is turnips. Deer love those too. You'll be fine with the winter wheat though. They'll be all over it.
