I am with Eastwood on the 30 06 but use a 270. I think it has a little flatter trajectory so I get to put the crosshairs on the target without any Kentucky windage.

I use a 250-3000 savage, but since you stated all around cartridge I would have to go with a different cartridge. One that has long range energy.
Since i favor short actions, i would go with the 270 WSM.Loaded with a 130 gr bullet it should be ideal for whitetail from 50 to 500 yds and fron 100lbs to 300lbs.I think I just talked myself into another deer rifle.

.270 with 140 grain (ok ,or 130 grain) bullets. Check out the new Hornady bullets before you buy for next year. Flat trajectory, mucho fps great impact, adequate power short range, and long range for normal scope hunting. My hunting mentor started before the gun and bullet were invented and has never had cause to look back. I agree.

bear I would say an 06, it is a good combination of brush and long range shooting. I don't own one yet because where I hunt my 30-30 is the perfect gun.

i like the 3006 also...perfect clear out for the long pokes if you practice....if you want a little less recoil i also love the 308 and it will do everything the 06 will...both have a wide variety of ammo to choose from and its easy to find in most areas..my local walmart sells both...theres tons of rounds out there that will work fine...anyything from a 243 on up will be fine and some people go smaller and use a good well placed shot...

The cartridge you can shoot accurately, given the area you hunt. Do you need to make 300yd shots routine? Are you in some thick stuff where 50yd shots are the norm? Anything from a .243 to a 300 win mag will work, but there is no perfect round, or perfect gun. Maybe there is for you, or where you hunt, but no one will ever agree. I would say 30-06 in 150 grain, works wonders, but a .270 is just as perfect as a .308 or a .303 British
