I have a Remington 870 shotgun. Great gun, deer hunt with it all the time. Nice and accurate. As to your question I prefer to take bucks although my first deer that I took did not have antlers and I was happy.

Look at the savage package models. They are reasonably priced to get you started. That's what I bought when I started hunting four years ago, and it's been great. It's available in lots of different calibers. My suggestion is if you are going to hunt deer, get a 30-06 or something like that with lots of knock down power. Every deer I've hit with the 30-06 had fallen immediately with the first shot. It's good to have the confidence that your game will go down like that. If you need a second shot to finish it off, fine, but they aren't going to get up and run much when hit with the 06.
