Homemade scent killer questions?
A question for you that make your own scent killer-
The formula is 1 gal distilled water, 1 gallon of 3% peroxide, 2 cups of baking soda, and 8 oz. of scent free soap. I keep hearing, do not use the peroxide from the stores in brown jugs. And to stir it up in a bowl, then pour into a jug. DO NOT SHAKE UP IN JUG. Do you have to use the peroxide at all? What exactely does it do. And why not use store bought peroxide. I can't notice any odors? And why do you not shake it up in a jug? I'm really confused on that one. |
RE: Homemade scent killer questions?
The Peroxide and the Baking Soda react to dissolve the mixtures into a compound. I would use the Peroxide, I would say use the 3% stuff from the store. If you get too high, the peroxide will actually eat the clothes away.
By stirring, it dissolves the baking soda better, you want the baking soda to be mostly dissolved before mixing the rest of the ingredients in!;) |
RE: Homemade scent killer questions?
So, do you mix the baking soda and water first, then pour in the soap and peroxide or does it really matter?

RE: Homemade scent killer questions?
Hillbilly, I use the drug store type peroxide. It works fine. I mix 16oz peroxide, 16oz distilled water, 1/2 cup baking soda, and 1 oz of the green sent-free shampoo/soap. Stirr it up in a large container until everything's dissolved, and divvy it up in a couple of new spray bottles (I get those at the Dollar Store). Don't screw the lids on tight, for at least a few days, because there's a chemical reaction going on there, and those gasses have to vent. Don't shake em up, because it's the equivolent of shaking up a high-powered soda. It'll spew out all over the place. Once the gasses have fully escaped, it's ok to shake it up, but I'd wait at least 5 days or so. Try to keep it out of the sun, as peroxide deteriorates in sunlight--thus their dark bottles.

I used some homemade version late last year, it didn't ruin or discolor any clothes. No side effects on my garments.
