RE: Deer hunting with pistol
I watched a friend shoot a buck 2yrs ago with a .357 from about 15 feet away. that damn thing ran for almost a mile when another frind watched it lay down and then finished him with his 12ga. it was a good shot just didn't knock him down, at that range i figured the deer would have a heart attack. i would go with something bigger than .357

[/align]I used to use my S&W .44 for deer in Iowa, and it made deer do somersaults when you hit them good. My recommendation is to get as long of a barrel as you can find, it will greatly improve your accuracy. And take your time when you're actually leveling the barrel on an animal. I quit using mine and got a slug gun when I found that when I had a deer in my sights, I got too excited and pointed the gun rather than aimed it.

RE: Deer hunting with pistol
Ten years ago, I bought a Stainless Taurus M44 (model before the raging bull) in 44 mag to carry as a side arm while hunting. Last year, I decided to use it as my primaryweapon.I shot a buck with it. One shot and it fell in its tracks. It was quartering away and the bullet did not exit so all the bullets energy was transferred to the deer. The deer looked like it had been hit by a 12 gauge slug.
In short, I recommend the 44mag. I've also been very pleased with my Taurus.
