Take a look at this trail cam picture. Here is a link to it. I did not think deer bleed this bad while scraping the velvet off.

Velvet is "very" rich in blood and they do bleed profusely sometimes when rubbing maybe a little early. The also will eat the velvet which could explain the blood in the mouth. Very high in protein for them.

I don't see any remenants of velvet on him. I think he has an injury on his head.

How he got it is wide open.
