Drought conditions

Everything is as dry as dust.
All the grass is straw.
The leaves are turning brown and falling of the trees.
There will be very little mast. A few wild grapes is about all I've seen.
The water holes are drying up. Anybody have any thoughts on how this will effect the deer. And I might should hunt them.

In dry falls we found them in the swamps or low areas. For one thing thats where the only green growth was. We hunted the oak ridges and got skunked. With no green undergrowth or acorns, they had no reason to be there. I say head for the wet areas.

When its dry - where you find water, you will most likely find the deer.
In NC its as dry as a bone also.

Good Luck

Yep, pretty bad down here...Saw a fire hydrant chasing a dog just yesterday...

Caught 4 catfish last week, couldn't eat them, covered in ticks....

I took a 5 gallon bucket to the woods yesterday, filled it with water, that's what I'm hunting over on Saturday....

Its really dry here too. All the trees are dying and there is hardly any water left in the creeks. I was wondering how the deer are going to do if we end up having a hard winter. I know all the farmers are going through a hard time trying to get hay for the winter months because we only had about 1 good hay crop this year when we usually have 3 or 4. It sucks...

ktbearpaws,

I feel your pain. I am in Wood County, andhave a creek that runs through my property that usually has 3 foot of water. I now have 1/2 foot of water. My ponds are drying up and one is completely dry. If this weather continues, I don't think we will see any fall foliage in WV.

deer need far less water than you realize. If you can find a secluded watering source, then you've struck gold, but dont plan the entire season on it. The acorn crop here is incredible this year. Deer can survive on just dew on leaves in the morning - South Texas is WAY drier just about every year (excluding this year), and the deer survive just fine down there.
