RE: Will this rifle do the job?
The cartridge has plenty of power for deer. You won't have any trouble if you hit them in the right spot.

It might even be too much power and you could loose good meat.

Plenty!

Power wise, it falls right between the 308 winchester and 30-06. So it certainly is enough power, and certainly not too much either. Just make sure you use a soft point expanding bullet in it, and not a fmj.

It would work great, but make sure you don't use FMJ (Full Metal Jacket) bullets, because those are against the law for big game in most states.
Don't worry about having too much gun, there really isn't such a thing, heck, if you can shoot it well, a .300 Win. Mag. makes a great deer rifle, so you have a good gun. |

Find a deer and try it on it.

It'll do just fine:) And, you won't ruin any more meat than with anything else so long as you avoid hollow points or something along that line.

That gun is pretty much a .30-06. As long as you hit pretty close to where you aim, make a good shot, that cartridge will work like a champ. That round, especially using 180 grain bullets, will penetrate well, and is not going so fast that percussion and shock will be any problem in the animal. I have killed many deer, and one elk with my .30-06, and it has always done the job.
