I'm not the most experienced bowhunter in the world, but out here in the midwest, mid-october is pre-rut and I haven't had too much luck trying to bring in the bucks with doe scents, grunts or rattling. However I have had luck with hunting food sources, particularly oak groves when the acorns starting dropping. When the acorn drop starts happening it generally takes place right at first light and sounds like it's raining in the woods. I have literally seen deer run to the oak grove looking to fill up on a plentiful food source.

If I were you I would locate one of these oak groves, find the most obviously used deer trail to place your stand and don't forget to play the wind correctly! When you hear what sounds like rain in the woods at first light, hang on and wait to see them come running ;)

Be there on the first cold front an spend your time hunting the does in the areas where they feed, specially if there is buck sign around.

Personally I am a firm believer of always hunt the edges and this doesnt happen to me .
I lot of hunters start the season this way then move in deeper way to early then scatter them.
Good Luck this coming season.
P.S.- Play that wind the best you can also, if its night right dont hunt that stand

for one thing there is no october lull its just bull crap that is the time when the acorns drop and the deer go to the oaks so if you hunt in a group of oak trees you should see some action

I do not know of an Oct. lull either, one thingyou better get it done an it isyour best chance becauseby the middle Oct the woods are going tobe filling up. I get most of my deer in Oct,although Nov. has been good to me too.

Yep find those acorns and hunt themhard!!Hunt the food sources and field edges early on. Take advantage of bean fields that are still green before they turn to a crunchy meadow. I don't buy the October lull either. Great time to be in a stand that hasn't been overhunted and stunk upor hunting in woods that deer haven't had contact with humans for9 months. Good time to get a slammer IMO.
