July Rut!!!

Myself and a friendcouldn't believe our spotting scopes a little while ago. We crested our favorite glassing spot and looked down into the open field below and immediately spotted 9 deer. Four fawns, 3 does, and 2 small bucks. As we watched the larger buck of the two walking next to a doe, the two kinda of licked each other and then the doe began to walk away slowly. Of course the buck followed and soon the doe stopped and the buck actually mounted the doe twice. We couldn't believe our eyes. I have never seen this out of season before. Has anyone else ever seen this. Can anyone explain this? Is he practicing, playing, asking her if she wants to go steady or what?

I've never seen it, but a friend just told me about something similar, he was on his CB station in his trailer, was leaving to get a coffee from the house and saw two deer. As he watched the small buck tried to mount the doe, they ran off but he's not sure if she ran off and he chased her, or they saw him and were scared off together.
This was 2 weeks ago.

They breed here all year round. Fawns drop all times of the year.

Doga act the same way--and Im not talking about onyour pant leg!! It is just part of the equation, but not actual breeding.

Im going to say that he wasnt breeding her. Deer arent receptive yet. If it was possible, the fawn woudl be born durign winter months and more than likely wouldnt survive.

They go throught the thoughts anytime of the year but the stars only align in the fall.
