It is if you can shoot it well. The cartridge is powerful enough.

As long as you use a good hunting type of bullet and not a military surplus round it will work. Not the first choice as a hunting rifle though. Shot placement is the key, heck a .22 will kill a deer if hit in the right spot. A good friend of mine shot a nice buck many years ago with a 7.7 Jap and it was just as dead as if you shot it with a .300 Mag.

That gun will work at 100 yrds or closer if you have open sights.

One thing about the russian military bolts, they are really ruff to cycle the action, especially with cartridges. You may only get 1 shot, it could jam, or in the heat of the moment you could be sitting there pounding on the bolt with your fist trying to eject and chamber another round. I have a Russian Mosin Nagant (7.62x54R), and a Kar98k (7.92x57 or 8mm mauser). It is easier to find hunting style rounds for the 8mm, I dont think I have ever seen anything for the Nagant other than surplus ball ammo (FMJ). Which would kill it, if you take out lungs, heart, or spine. But its not the prefered bullet of choice.
