Default 12Ga. or 20Ga. Slug Gun? Need your opinion!

I am going to buy a H&R Ultra Slug Hunter, but I am having a difficult time choosing between a 12Ga. or 20Ga. I've read all about pro's and cons of each, but would like to hear some of the true diehards opinions before I make my decision!!!!!!!!!!!

I have both of them, 12 Deluxe & 20 standard.

They are both great (awesome) shooters and they have a few pounds in them. So you might want to consider that. What is your body size and hunting style? If you are a small guy you can't go wrong choosing the 20. I'm 6-0, 275 (+). The weight of the 12 has never bothered me a bit.

Both will certainlykill deer with one good shot. But I have to admit that I like the effect of bowling some of them over with those 3-inch, 1-1/4 oz. Brenneke Gold Magnums.

I just posted this in the guns forum...

I own a 12 ga. H&R ultra with a Nikon 3-9. All I can say is that it's a dream. I have Rem. 870, and 1100 slug guns which don't even come close to the accuracy of this babydoll. I shoot the lightfields 2 3/4, and get 1/2 inch groups at 100yds. I wouldn't think twice about reaching out to 115- 120 yds. (but would rather keep it at 100)

I've heard great things about the 20 ga. but have never shot one. I tend to just like things bigger, plustheitlooks really handsome with the heavy12 ga. 24" bull barrel and the Laminated American hardwood Monte Carlo pistol grip stock.

To add: The 12 ga. gets to bea little heavy in the field.

I have the 12Ga in the deluxe model, and my father has the 20Ga. in the deluxe model. I have consistently shot deer at 116, 119, and the furthest was 126 yards. But I am buying a graduation gift for a nephew who is 18 and I know he can handle a 12, but is the ballistics of the 20Ga. better? I have shot both and its nice when you shoot the 20 and laugh about the recoil, but how much energy does it lose at 120-140 yards. Because in my experience with those guns, its the only gun out there that can stack bullets at 100 yards. We hunt from stands so the weight is not an issue!! But the less kick is nice, because when sighting-in, concentrating on the target and not worrying about the recoil I think is key. We're only hunting deer, that's why the energy loss at 100+ yards is not significant enough to be a factor...... But that's why i would like your opinions, to see what you believe..... I should take into consideration...... I'm sort of leaning toward the 20,,,,, just thinking about time at the range....

I placed an order for one in 20ga. it should be at my friends shop this week. Go with the 20ga., mine will be topped off with a Leupold VX-II in 3-9X40, taking it to Illinois this year as well as here in NJ, will be testing many different slugs, from my understanding the Remington Core-Lokts are awsome, 2" high at 50 yards will put you out to be dead center at 150 yds.

I am done with slug guns, now that we can use rifles in area of NY. I always used a 12 gauge Rem. 11-87. It was the way to go when I bought it. With the new hi-tech 20 gauge slugs, that isthe way to go now. No more nasty 12 gauge slug recoil!

I Got a smokin' deal on a 20 ga and bought it for the wife. After playing around with it, I try and use it any chance I get, and in fact shot the only deer I harvested with it last year. It's topped with a Nikon Pro Staff in 2-7 power and is an absolute tack driver. I shoot the Hornady SST and they are incredible.

Ive never shot an H&R, but i gotta jump to the Remingtons defense. My hunting group has gotten 1/2 inch groups out of an 1100 at 125 yards using 3 inch Winchester Platinum Tips.

The 12 gauge simply has far more options than the 20 to not consider it as THE slug gun choice. Buy the 12!

That sounds like some good shooting.

My 1100 has a Hastings barrel with a Leupold scope and it couldn't group 3 in a pie plate at 100 yds. It's probably a flaw in the gun, but I just can't get it to group. The 870 is much better, but I could never get the consistancy thatthe H & R has. No offense on those Remingtons, their great guns no doubt. This just happens to be my situation with them.
