When do antlers stop growing?

I got a nice buck on camera and thought, "it still has more growing to do". About how much longer do you think bucks grow their antlers, another 3 weeks or so you think??

Here in NY they stop growing sometime in august. They need time to go througha hardening process before the velvet comes off.

RE: When do antlers stop growing?

Here in kentucky the deer usually shed their velvet in late august or early september. So I would say they quit growing about 2-3 weeks before that. But I am not 100% sure

RE: When do antlers stop growing?

From what I've read over the years (and personally observed as well) whitetail deer antlers reach approximately 90% of their full growth by
July 15th over most of their range. Nutrition, environment (particularly drought) can affect this. In a drought stricken area where feed/nutrition is affected antler growth will slow down considerably. What you see by July 4th as far as antler develpment will be pretty much what you see when they shed the velvet...They may add a little tine length and main beam length, but not much else. Spread, number of points, and mass are set by July 4th.

September is when we start seeing bucks without their velvet here in my area. I have seen some fresh rubs in August too though. August-September for us.

In my area bucks began to stop growing in mid August....i believe that many factors can change when the stop each year though

RE: When do antlers stop growing?

the "old wives" tale around here is that their spread is set by about July 4, and they're totally done growing by mid-August (height-wise).

For some, when I listen to their hunting harvest stories, I think the antlers are still growing.

RE: When do antlers stop growing?

I watched 9 bucks in a group yesterday evening after supper. It looked to be a bachelor group of mostly mature bucks except for two small 3X3's. They were about 400 yards away, but through my spotting scope I could see pretty much exactly what the racks looked like. All of the points were fully developed. One buck had a forked back tine and another had a couple of stickers between the base and the brow tines. The racks on all of the bucks were fully developed to my eye. Whatever growth there would be between now and when they shed the velvet would be negligible.

RE: When do antlers stop growing?

This is how they are up here after a study on them was completed.

Bucks annually produce antlers, which are made of bone. Triggered by day length and maintained by hormone production, antlers begin growing in April, and are nurtured by a velvety outer network of skin tissue and bloodvessels. Velvet is shed when growth is complete in late August and September. The hardened, polished antlers remain until they are shed in late December to early March.
