I've taken numerous deer at 250-300 yards. Only when they have stopped and given me that broadside shot. That's just the nature of the beast during rifle season where I hunt. We have lots of big animals but also lots of wide open spaces.I use a 7 mm mag. and hunt long tree lines where during the rut the bucks come out all over. You have to be ready for everything from that 20 yard shot to 300 plus. I'm zeroed in at 200 so with the ballistics of the 7mm mag., it allows meability to take them at those distances. I also shoot 100's of rounds through my gun during the off season as well as loading my own rounds,so I know exactly whatboth my gun and I can do. Not that I make it my mission but I have taken deer at well over 300 yards. With out the practise and experience there would be no way I could do this.

I've taken quite a few deer at 250 - 300 yards (I hunt a lot of power lines) and never had a problem. However, I voted 350-400 because it says any North American big game and my elk rifle could easily hit the mark at 350 yards. Of course I'm assuming perfect conditions with a solid rest.

with my Rem 25-06 I good on the range at 400yds....but I've never had the chance to try a shot that far on a deer. about 90% of the deer I've ever killed was less than 100yds, with the longest shot I ever made on a deer was 210yds.

At an elk sized animal I would go out to250 yds with my 06 if I had a good rest such as shooting sticks or a tree. My longest shot has been 210 yds at a stag caribou which I dropped with 1 shot. My plan is to get a 325 WSM with some decent glass. I feel that would give me another 100 yards if it were needed.

My longest was 297 yds with my 300 WBY and I would feel comfortable with a shot out to 400 yds.

I've never taken a shot over 175 yards, but as much as I've been shooting here lately (if I keep it up until season starts) I'd probably take a shot way out there if the situation was right. So I voted for 400 +


Edit- Long shots are not the way I prefer to do it, I'd rather get within 15 yards, thats hunting. Most of my shots have been very close.

Hunting deer I would not try past 300 yards but that is me.

i shot at, but missed, a doe at about 200 yards with my .30-30
looking back on it now i don't think i should have shot at it. i wasn't comfortable with the shot. lesson learned. i'm just glad it was a clean miss
