RE: early antler sheds

you beat me to the post. my wife was in her tripod late this evening and a big bodyed deer cam right next to the stand and it's horns were alredy gone.one was still real red.shead in last day or two.

a friends son took a deer last week with only one horn, when he went to pull the deer to the road the other pulled off.

it must be all the weird weather.

I am not a hunter I am a whitetail population reduction specialest

remember keep your back to the sun, your knife sharp, and your powder dry.

RE: early antler sheds

There are many reasons that a buck will shed his antlers early. I have witnessed it as early as the first week of December. The majority of the time it is a 1 1/2 buck that is nutritionaly stressed. And was probably a late born fawn from the previous year, therefore leading to the stress (smaller body size, less time to physically develope)

I have seen two half-rack bucks running around in the last week. My buddy shot one and when he grabbed its antler to drag it out the antler came off in his hand. If you get one you want to have mounted don't drag it by the antlers at this time of year.

If the antler gets pulled off, any reputable taxidermist will be able to re-attach it without a problem.

RE: early antler sheds

Since Nov. 20th I've found 12 sets of sheds here in Northern IN. All of the ones I seem to find are still on the deer and I just cut them off after I kill em' leaving the deer there to coyote hunt later. I'm not a hunter, I'm a bone collector.
