Why a Monday?

Pennsylvania's opening day of buck season has always been on a Monday. When they had a separate doe season, that was on a Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. Why, if they want to use hunting as a tool to thin the herd, do they have the 1st 5 days of deer season when everyone has to work? Bear season, too. No other season is like this. Small game and turkey open on a Saturday. Fishing seasons all open on a Saturday. What gives? Any other states open their seasons during the work week?

That does sound pretty stupid! The only other state that I know anything about is Michigan. Their gun deer season opens on the 15th of November every year.

Ontario's gun deer season starts the first monday of november every year,, the place I hunt starts the third monday of november every year. Most people I know travel a ways to theyre hunting areas,, this way you travel on the weekend before, take the whole week off, and travel home the following weekend!<img src=icon_smile_big.gif border=0 align=middle> Sounds just perfect to me!

NJ and NY are always Mondays and are actually written in law as such. ILLinois always opens on a Friday.

I agree that having Mon be the opener in this type of economy doesnt make a lot of sense.

It doesn't matter how stupid it maybe the law in Pa states that Regular Firearm season opens the monday after Thanksgiving and run for two consecutive weeks exclusive of Sundays. Even if the law wasn't written like this it would still never change because it is a traditon.

Save the sport. Take a kid hunting twice and hook them for life!!!

I dont know why they continue with the Monday opener. The Bow season opens on a Saturday. Years ago most hunters always toke a week off to hunt. But the economy and the life style of people has got out of control.People cant afford to take off anymore cause of their passion to keep up with the jones.Got to have a big home, new trucks ,over use of the evil credit cards and so forth. The Government laid a trap and lots of people fell for it.I think if you have a passion to hunt ,you will trim your budget to do so.But I would not be opposed to a saturday opener. But then you will hear from the person who has to work saturdays to support their lust for materialism.so then they will want hunt on Sunday.

CT's opens on the weekday and closes on a weekday. Doesn't make sense, but when has any of that mattered to those that put the laws in to effect. I personnaly like it as I'm a third shifter most of the time and right now in between jobs. Not so many nut cases and out of staters to contend with. Fall turkey opened this year on a sat. The same as small game re-opener. Talk about confusing, that's why I keep a copy of the game laws with me when ever in the field.

RE: Why a Monday?

I do like the Monday opener for one reason. We go up to camp the weekend before and we can relax. We can stay up late and shoot the breeze on Fiday and Saturday night. On Saturday and Sunday we can split wood, target shoot and go visit our buddies in a nearby camp. Then we take it easy Sunday night, go to bed early and get serious for Monday's opener. However, more people would get to participate if the opener were on a weekend. I just plan ahead of time to save some vacation time. Bear season, on the other hand, does not include any weekend time. You have Monday-Wednesday so you better have some extra vacation time. The old doe season was the same way and a lot of people couldn't go because they burned up their vacation time for buck season. Oh well. I guess you have to decide what's more important - spending a week in the Bahamas or saving those days for deer camp.
