ESPN's Around the Horn

Just watched the final segment of ESPN's Around the Horn and I must admit I was shocked. For those not familiar with the show, it pits 4 newspaper columnist from different areas of the country debating hot sports topics of the day on a talkshow. Usually it's the same 3 or even 4 columnist every day. Each columnistreceives points for good responses to a chosen topic. It's all in fun as the winner gets 30 seconds to discuss anything he wants at the end.

Well, today's "winner" was J.A. Adande of the L.A. Times. He began his commentary by statingmany people are upset about the allegations of dog fighting that occurred at the property of football star quarterback Michael Vick. What Adande claims to confuse him is the hundreds of pro athletes and coaches throughout sports that go deer hunting and that is supposedly O.K. He wantsto know why one is O.K. while the other is not. He wants an understanding clear across the board about those poor animals!

That commentary amazed me. I know the guy resides in L.A., but to compare dog fighting to deer hunting? How incredibly stupid can you be comparing apples to oranges? I know it's silly, but thinking like this burns me!I've debated the hunting topic with members of PETA and other organizations thru newsprint and/or face to face, but Adande's comments are among the most absurd I've seen. I had to email him with a reply after I collected my thoughts. I felt better. Feel even better know that I've vented here. Thanks!!!:)

I missed it, but he is an idiot if he evens mentions both in the same breath. Another young idiot city boy that thinks he had a lock on reality when he should just shut his cakehole and talk about things that he may have an inkling of knowledge about. Idiot.

He probablly shops for his wifes underwear!!!!Wait that might not be a bad thing!I just hate people who have no idea what the sport of hunting is and not to mention its food value, make such comments. Its to bad he will never feel the rush right before you pull the trigger.See the excitment in his kids eyes as they take there first buck or understand that we are for the deer it makes our sport what it is.Without them no hunting!!!!!

I guess he missed the memo about how many hunting shows ESPN is involved in (even though it'sless than it use to be). I hope this isn't the new "look and feel" of ESPN.

Wile i do not dog fight i wouldnt call anything stupid i dont know and understand fully.. call me whatever yall want.. crazy.. whatever but i refuse to put someone down for something unless i have been there and know what its about.. same with chicken fighting or bullfighting or whatever.... anyone who calls something stupid that hasnt tried it or at least seen it and knows what its like and about shouldnt knock it.. thats MY opinion on it:eek:.. also YES they are somewhat alike subjects and u can compare them slightly.. they both include animals and the death/wounding of animals ( even tho in very different ways).. but im not trien to start anything.. just some thaughts

You're kidding me right? If he honestly made that statement then it sounds more like a bias defense for Vick. One is illegal while the other is not. Plain and simple

RE: ESPN's Around the Horn

How can anyone with half a brain make that statement. If an email address is provided I will also email ESPN management letting them know that the hunting community expects an apology. To compare controlled animal fighting where the intent is for animals to tear one another up to hunting where you are looking to kill an animal as quickly and cleanly as possible and then prepare the animal for table fare.Night and day.The more I think about it the angrier I get!

I just sent in my displeasure to the network!!!! I watch there channel 80% of the time. I told them the only thing I like better then sports is deer hunting and was considering not watching. I explained it wouldnt hurt there ratings but something needs to be done about this as they host hunting shows and not once have I seen a program for dogfighting. Doug

Deer fight each other in the wild. When hunters shoot the deer, we are preventing deer fighting. Therefore, hunters are the only ones doing anything about stopping the brutal practice of deer fighting.:)

Hey, thanks for the feedback guys!Too often these type of comments made by the media go unheeded.Nice to see sportsmen take notice. Big thanks to those who emailed ESPN or Adande. Will it make a difference? Maybe not, but it shows we care about our sport!!! I didn't receive a reply from Adande, but then again, I'd be shocked to get one.

RE: ESPN's Around the Horn

While I don't like JA in general and think he is one of the weaker "guests" on the show, never have I been as upset as I was when JA Adande compared Dog fighting to deer hunting.
Dog fighting is deliberate cruelty whereby pets are starved and beaten then forced to fight one another often to the death.
Deer hunting is a sport and way of life that has been an important part of the American way of life since the 1700's.
If they are so alike, why isn't dog fighting on ESPN outdoors?
Please fire JA.
Sent. I'm about to send one off to old JA. What a tool.

I sent one to ESPN, Around the Horn, and to Adande at the Times. The one to ATH got returned as undeliverable. I am waiting with eager anticipation for a retraction and apology---NOT! One bit of advice--be considerate and word your response well so as not to further fuel their prejudiced concept of hunters in general.

Caught the beginning of Friday's ATH. Apparently,it was Adande's last day at the L.A. Times. He later thanked everyone for their kind letters and emails.[:-]Not sure as to why he was leaving the Times or even where he is going.Good riddance!

RE: ESPN's Around the Horn

Heres mine....

Your comments concerning deer hunting were pretty crude. You bascially degraded those of us who hunt to put food on the table and classified us with people who kill animals for entertainment. Keep in mind that deer hunting is legal and dog fighting is not. I understand that you are from L.A. and probably do not undertand the reality of having to rely on hunting to survive. The hunting community is pretty fired up. I would throw out an apology to the audience and ESPN as they have been showing hunting episodes for years. Like i said, a brief public apology would make a lot of hunters blood pressure go down. Thanks,
Rob G.
