Question for lefties???

I will be buying my identical twins girls thier first gun in March, I am only going to buy one to start with, they are the rarest form of identicals, they are mirror image twins, one is right handed and the other is left handed.

Okay here is the question for the lefties, if you were to buy a single shot 22 rifle and the only thing you could get was a right handed rifle, what action style would you get and why? What style wouldn't you buy and why?

I shoot lefty,I have a ruger 10-22 semi and has never been a problem.Just a little instruction on safty. There probably is a better answer but I have never thought about it.For kids I guess a lever or pump would be safer. Those are a few things I would think about in my thought process.I hesitate to make any suggestion when it comes to your kids.I would talk to a GOOD dealer and ask him.

Denny I had a ruger 10-22 that I loved, it burnt up in a house fire. I am going to buy them a single shot 22, not only because they are safer for a beginner, but it teachs a new hunter to make that first shot count.

RE: Question for lefties???

Hey Taz
Good to hear you are going to allow her to shoot whats comfortable for her. When I was a kid everyone tried to break me, and have me do things righthanded. I do shoot a gun southpaw, and I have shot quite a few models and have never had an incident(knock on wood). I know from your past posts you are very safety concious, so Im assuming the kids will be shooting with saftey glasses on<img src=icon_smile_cool.gif border=0 align=middle>. I received my ruger 10-22 as a gift and it had a guard installed for extra protection. I dont know if thats comes standard or has to be purchased separate. Im sure a pump would be safer, as long as she drops the gun off her shoulder before she racks it.
Happy Holidays!

Taz,

Look at the NEF Handi-Rifle. It is break open, single shot, and definately lefty friendly.

RE: Question for lefties???

Taz, I am a southpaw. Up until my last 2 rifles, I always shot right handed actions, no problems. I have 2 left handed bolts now but to start out and a single shot I can't see why she wouldn't be ok with a righty bolt. The only problem I ran into with right handed guns was the cheek plate, but not to many 22's have those. I would say go with a bolt, since she will unshoulder to eject and reload. A Lever might throw the case on her hand, semi auto's and pumps seem to blow them well clear of my face, but you said you want a single shot.

Oh and good for you not trying to convert her to right, I know I was told I did it all wrong and shoot right. Finally dad realized I shot much better with the left eye and said go for it. However it sure is a pain in the right mans world!!! BTW the only thing I do left is shoot a gun and bow, everything else is right...go figure!!!

My ex mother-in-law was a leftie and my oldest daughter, I have heard some really bad stories from lefties who people tried to make them convert, in most cases it doesn't work.

Taz, I would say buy them a single shot lever action.
