RE: Doe & Fawn Part II

If it is late in the season the fawn will be able to make it without its mother. Here in Texas fawns are born in May and June and most are weaned by the end of deer season. Our lease biologist told us that it is best to kill does early in the season, before the rut, so that the bucks don't waste their energy breeding a doe that will end up being killed later in the season. It also frees up any food source that might be used if she is killed early. The does killed will often be lactating butthat the milk haslittle nutritionalvalue.

If the fawn is a button buck then I would not shoot either one. If the fawn is a female then I would opt to take her first and then the mother so I know if she got away she would likely survive.

I for one wouldnt hesitate to shoot both, the fawn being first.

The biologist also said that if you want button bucks to stay around your area it is best to kill it's mother because she will run it out of the area to keep from inbreeding.

Explain why it is wrong to kill a yearling but it is ok to kill an older deer. You are out there to hunt and kill,so what is the difference.
