Good feed to use
 

Once the season is over up here I wanted to put out a feeder to help get the deer through the winter as well as do some photography. Can anyone offer any tips on using one? Placement, feed, timing, etc.

It's a small lot with little feeding area left thanks to the 40 new houses they put in right in the middle of the land. It's somewhat over populated at this point so I I'm hoping they'll come to the feeder pretty quickly.

Any ideas are appreciated.

Can't beat shelled corn! WI restricts it even around houses now days.

Ok, here's a follow up question. If I used shelled corn what would I do to keep the squirrels from eating it all before the deer got to it? Would I set the timer for dusk for a while till the deer get used to the fact that it's there and then change it slowly to a daytime cycle?

We used to just put up with the squirrels. They didn't eat that much.

Perhaps some "squirrel stew" is appropriate??

Mass, I feed shelled corn year round and the squirrels get there share but they ain't nothing compared to the racoons. The coons have no ethic. They ain't happy to they've tore your feeder down and spilled the corn on the ground and rubbed there scent all in it so nothing else will eat it but rats. I've about figured it's easier to go down to where I feed twice a week and spread the corn out on the ground so the coons don't mess it all up. I been spreading it over a large area and it seems to make it last longer. The corn brings in turkeys, deer, coons, skunks, possums, crows, song birds, I've even seen a coyote eating it. I put up a 'Deer only sign' next to my feeder but it didn't help. <img src=icon_smile_big.gif border=0 align=middle>

Try a gravity feeder,the coons don't get to weird with it.But with a feeder everything is going to eat out of it,so what is the down side to that?I mean the rats eat some ,that helps the hawks and other birds of pray get through the winter,ect.

Hunting is not a sport,it's a lifestyle.

I've used a mix of whole corn,whole soybeans,Whole barley,with dried mollasses,about 25# of trace mineral saltw/selenium,and 25# of DiCal. They really go thru the stuff
