Mature vs. Not Mature

Example of a deer that needs to grow up and one that is going into or at his prime.

As a general rule of thumb, you know fully well how to spell mature when you are mature.

Take it easy on the guy. Some people just can't spell. My wife is a high school English teacher, and she is still laughing over this one.

I don't know guys, looks like the same deer to me from a different angle and he's a bit more "rutted up" in the second pic.
Look how the right side both have the little claw at the end.

Considering that the two pics were taken only 6 hrs 49 mins apart, I doubt that is the same deer. Also notice the difference in color along the ridge of his back.

Honestly, neither one of them are mature bucks.

TexasOaks 04-15-2007 12:23 PM

RE: Mature vs. Not Mature

I said almost... I bet that second buck is 4.5 years old. Mature is around 5.5 or older. The first one is an example of a young gun. They are comparisons.

I am not sure what the time difference has to do with anything, but the tine length on the g2 on the right side is not the same.

MDDave, if shoot deer at that size, that's all you'll ever have. Let'em grow a couple of years and you'll have the kind of bucks we all really want to kill.

Around here the 1st buck is 1.5yrs old.. and the 2nd one is 2.5yrs old.

I would have passed on both of them...

To each their own, in my neck of the woods both are shooters. I would be happy if either one strolled by my stand. We don't eat antlers. It's in the eye of the beholder.JMO

You need to rememember that this is the south (Texas)and body sizes are different than in the north.Thatseconddeer is not2.5 years old; and here's a picture of a 1.5 year olds (six ponts).

ben673 yeah so i let that deer go it walks 100 yards down the hill an BOOM guess what someone else jus filled there freezer.. an there i sit... the only way i see "let them go they'll grow" working is if its state wide ora personowns a good bit of ground an can keep the deer hangin around..

Here's the second buck but earlier in the year:

Here you can see when his brow tine is not broken:

RE: Mature vs. Not Mature

I see your point, we've got a lot ground we can control. So, in your situation there's the chance the deer you let go will be shot by someone else, but if you shoot it there is no doubt he won't get any bigger. Probably the best thing state agencies could do is move the rifle season until after the rut, less buck movement = a higher doe harvest (ex. Iowa, Illinois, Kansas). Also, I like antler restrictions, they protect most 1 and half year olds, and make hunters carefully study a deer before they shoot it.

I agree; we have them in our county where we hunt.

I wouldn't shoot either of these bucks where I hunt, but that doesn't mean in some places there shooters. They are diffently different bucks in the first pic notice theleft antler 3 up and a little brow in the second pic two up and a brow!! Walt
