Western Michigan Deer Hunters?

I was just in the Ludington Area looking at houses, and I noticed a ton of farm land in the area. So, I was curious, what is the most effective way to hunt the deer in that area? Farmlands? Swamps? etc.. I am 100% new to hunting whitetail. Killed a bunch of Mulies and Blacktail. So it will be a new game for me. Any advice would be great! Look forward to moving there in May. I always look forward to what the Coast Guard has in store for me at a new Unit! Maybe I will see some of you in the feild!

You might want to try posting your question on this forum: http://www.michigan-sportsman.com/forum/index.php

It's devoted entirely to Michigan hunting. I'm guessing there are a lot of people there who could answer your questions. They're a good bunch.

I know a lot of guys in that area do pretty well in the swamps, but you never really know until you get out and stomp around. Good luck finding a place, its a great state to be in!

Welcome to Michigan buddy! i haven't really hunted farmlands butare you gun hunting or bow hunting? if bow hunting, go into the woods a bit if you are hunting a crop. if gun hunting, i would get a treestand up right along the edge of the woodline.

Hey thanks for the responses! I will be bowhunting. I plan on spending a bunch of time in the woods. So I am sure I will figure it out. It will be a change hunting out of a tree stand. I have always hunted spot and stalk.

I was born and raised in West Michigan, and have hunted all-over, mostly East of Ludington (for 16 years).

In-general, pretty much everywhere in Michigan is POUNDED! That area in-particular is hit amung the hardest anywhere. Sorry if this isn't what you want to hear, but it's the truth. Nearly everyone uses bait and shoots ANY buck that walks in-front of them. There are a few decent spots around, but very few bucks reach 2-1/2, let alone 3-1/2 or older.

I moved to Iowa 2 years ago because after hunting out of state, I couldn't stand hunting in Michigan anymore!

Muliefever, my family owns a cottage in Ludington. It is on Lake Hamlin...It is a BEAUTIFULarea up there isn't it? My uncle does a lot of deer hunting up there. The property they own is like 500 yards away from a swamp and they have a box ground blind that they hunt out of. I know he passes on a lot of deer. Seen some monsters up that way just driving. If you want I could give him a call and see if he has any suggestions on where to look for property or tactics to the deer up there...just let me know???
