Hung up buck
Today while driving down the road, I spot a buck hung up in a fence along side the road. Well I turned around and stopped, along with another gentleman. We got the buck calmed down as much as we could. We attempted to get the buck free from the fence but to no avail, he was hung up good. We ended up getting his back legs free but he was still hung up on his mid section. Another guy arrived and stood in the road stopping traffic,so when we freed the buck he wouldnt get hit. Then another guy arrived and told us to put a coat over its head so it wouldnt be as scared. We did this and the 3 of us got the buck free. He went back thru the fence and ran back along the fence, went 50 yards and tried to get thru the fence again and what happened next. You got it he got stuck in the fence again. So me and the first guy went down and put the coat over his head again, and got him free one more time. This time he went the other way and jumped in a pond and swam to the other side got out of the water and took off. Thats how my Saturday started out. But even though Im a deer hunter,it was very gratifying to help this animal in his time of need...

I once had a similar experience with a yearling when I was younger... accept she wasn't dumb enough to go back for another round... [&:] It is neat to help 'em out though aint it....:) |

RE: Hung up buck
I have to say I think yall did the right thing.More than once I have been shed hunting and come across deer that have been stuck in fences. Its not a pretty sight after coyotes get ahold of them and what an aweful way to go.

RE: Hung up buck
That is as good as it gets. Helping an animal survive it's tragedy's of it's life.I know you had to feel good about yourself!!!

RE: Hung up buck

RE: Hung up buck
Man you really screwed up anti's opinion of hunters didn't you? They don't understand that we want/need to help wildlife for their future and we have hearts by the way we hunt and willingness to help a animal in need. You did a good thing with the help of others freeing the deer!

That's the sort of image we want hunters to have. |
RE: Hung up buck
Great story. It's amazing no one got hurt. I guess the coat over the head did the trick.

RE: Hung up buck
It all falls under the heading of managing our resources...well done! :)

RE: Hung up buck
Great Job getting him loose. I will try the coat trick next time I find one hung-up, I got kicked once very hard by a young buck hung. There are alot of 5-strand barbwire fences in my area that are deer catchers. The 4-strand fence seems to not catch up many. Great Job!
