RE: Deer Trailing Dogs?
A question. Are these dogs used to trail and find a wounded/down deer? Back in the 50's there was an old fellow who poached to feed his 10 kids and he had a dog that would trail a wounded deer til it fell. He would never pay attention to a healthy deer, infact he wouldn't even look at them. Game warden went nuts trying to prove he was using the dog to get deer. (It was illegal to use dogs in Illinois.) the warden finally quit trying to catche him after he saw a deer run in front of him and the dog didn't even start. He had a soft spot for the old man as he was just feeding his family and never sold the deer.

BOWFANATIC,Thats cool.I just happen to have one of those teenie, weenie dogs.I have a little mini Daschund. You can tell what he is all about when he steps out of the door.He is as bad (or good) as a beagle, nose stuck to the ground and tail in the air.Maybe little "GUSTAV" can help out one day...LOL

I have a border collie/cocker spaniel that I have a strong feeling would make a good tracker, she goes nuts whenever she scents an animal, I also have a basset/lab mix that is hot into game. I have never used them for hunting, but I would be more then willing to give them both a try if I ever lose a trail just to see how they would do.

My cousin has a young blood hound that he is training to track deer. He tryed to train a Red Bone, but I think it wanted to track coons more than deer. I think any hound would work, but you would have to start them early. I don't think you could get one that has been trained to run something else, and get it to track deer. Or at least I can't. I am planning on getting a blood hound if my cousin's work out.

I personally use only walker dogs. Out of my pack I have 2 that trail very well & a few more that just run the sh** out of them. I use one older dog to put on a string & trail any that get wounded. A lot of people like beagles too, but they don't have enough drive for my taste.
