I have used both 3x9x40 and 3x9x50 and I really like the extra few minutes I seemed to get at the end of the day. Do you feel it really makes a difference or is it more determined by the scopes lense coating and clarity?

Depends on the scope. A good scope shouldn't need a 50 mm objective to have good light transmission. At least not in hunting powers. I don't even have a 50 on my 20 power varmint scope.

It may help with feild of view at higher powers though.

It will also make you mount your scope higher as well.

Honestly with a quality fully coated lens scope a 32 mm objective should work just fine in legal hunting hours, even in the shade.

Now if your talking a sub 100 dollar scope like a BSA or tasco or something you may notice a difference with a bigger objective. I bet it still won't be as clear as a scope for twice that price with half the size objective though.

My opinion anyway.

Thanks for the input. I know what you mean about the low end scopes. I have used a Burris most of my hunting life and recently whenI borroweda gunmy father had with a low end tasco on it, it was a little like looking through a fog in comparison. I guess it is all in what you get used to? Thanks again for the reply.

I would cosider bumping this a few times, there are some very knowledgable people here on optics. They could tell you the real deal.

You know what just dawned on me. In the next section down from this one in the forum index is a High Tech hunting section with a forum just for optics. Post this question there and I bet you get a better answer. I think it is fairly new, I forget it is there sometimes.
